Sometimes your students will rely on lumbar extension but think they are twisting. Here a few things you can look out for and some suggestions you can offer to help them discover thoracic rotation.

Sign up for my online 300hr YTT interest list. Registration will open soon.

Just living in and experiencing the physical the world gives you enough information to intuitively understand some basic biomechanical principles. You just need someone to ELI5 "explain it to me like I'm five."

From there, we can apply the concepts to all sorts of things we hear in yoga (like flat back preferences and rounded spine warnings or knee position fears) and think critically with nuance and context.

See you in a course soon, I hope. ✌️

300hr YTT for 2027 will be announced soon. Get on the interest list today!

If you're new here, you'll soon learn that I strongly favor isometric and eccentric stretching. I'm always playing around with ways to tie them into a regular yoga class sequence. Here's what I did yesterday.

Because I had to edit this down, I am showing and describing an isometric stretch in both standing versions (move into end range then pull). To make it eccentric, do the pull first (and hold that tension) and then move into a longer range.

If that's clear, happy yoga stretching.

If that's not clear, join me in July for my 3 hour Science of Stretching webinar. We'll get into the benefits of the variety of stretching types and much, much more. I have about 100 slides with links to original research to share.

I am always talking about the extension of the back hip in single pigeon being the most frequent limiting factor. Here's a version that emphasizes internal rotation of that back hip instead (something we don't really see in most common yoga poses).

Plus the eccentric component starts to incorporate your usable range in both hips and can elevate the sensation of stretch in that glute.

The next Science of Stretching webinar is in July and people are starting to sign up. Join us!

Gate pose flow idea with mobility, stretching, and a little adductor work.

Arguably, the best part of teacher training is turning a familiar pose into something completely novel with one small shift in focus.

This week, one of the final presentations centered around the skill of reaching, and in my feedback I introduced a few different ways for them to explore twists through that lens. A little extra length emphasizes a diagonal/oblique plane over the transverse and the whole pose changes.

This is the kind of stuff we do in the 300hr. We take common poses and look at them from a different angle so the experience of each is pose isn't limited by the standard script of cues you memorized in your 200hr.

Interest list for 2027 is now open. You know where to find the link.

Studying with me is like cleaning out a closet. Sometimes things get messier before you see the satisfying results.

You start by exposing everything you've stored in that metaphorical closet. Some things you toss immediately, others you organize neatly before putting them back. You invest in some new items and integrate them into the existing space.

In the end, you can step back, take in your hard work, and feel accomplished.

Join us for an in-person 4 day yoga teacher training in Las Vegas June 2-5 or get on the interest list for the online 300hr in 2027. You know where the links are.
