What is the difference between a W-2 and a 1099 — and why does it matter?

A W-2 means you were an employee and your employer withheld taxes from every paycheck.

A 1099 means you were paid as an independent contractor — and no taxes were withheld. That means you're responsible for paying them yourself at tax time. All of them. At once.

Not knowing the difference can result in a very unpleasant surprise every April.
