Good Monday morning! We would like to share our two employees that were promoted to the position of FTO (Field Training Officer) recently. Douglas Oxendine is a 10 year employee of Scotland County EMS, and Dalton Klatt has been with us for 2 years. They were chosen from several very capable candidates who could also have bright futures with our organization once more opportunities arise. They are pictures here receiving their brass from EMS Director Robert Sampson. Each employee's personal bio/history is accompanied with their respective pictures. Congratulations, gentlemen!

This week, the school system trained about 450 of their staff in Adult Hands-Only CPR. Scotland EMS management assisted, helping to show proper hand placement, rate and depth in their hands-on portion. By eliminating the mouth-to-mouth portion, Hand-Only CPR aims to remove hesitation and encourage more witnesses and bystanders into initiating life-saving action. People have roughly 5 minutes of oxygen remaining in their blood when they collapse. Immediate, uninterrupted chest compressions are highly effective in those crucial first few minutes. Thank you, Scotland County School System for letting us participate!

To perform this technique:
• Call 911 immediately.
• Push hard and fast in the center of the chest (at least 2 inches deep, at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute).

For the correct rhythm, you can push to the beat of classic songs like the Bee Gees' Stayin' Alive!

Randolph Mantooth (left) passed away yesterday at the age of 80. For most of you who do not know who that is, let me explain. In 1972, a television show premiered that featured a paramedic/firefighter duo of Johnny Gage (Mantooth) and Roy DeSoto (Kevin Tighe) titled "Emergency!" When the show premiered, there were 12 paramedic units in all of North America. In the next three years, 46 states enacted laws that allowed paramedics to practice emergency medicine. Within 10 years, more than half of all Americans were within 10 minutes of a paramedic rescue or ambulance unit.
Experts say that growth simply would not have occurred without Emergency! A lot of the older medics, that are now becoming few and far between, were inspired to pursue emergency medicine because of the show that was instrumental in its growth. The show ran for 7 years. Over the years, after the show ended, Mantooth spoke regularly at Firefighter and EMS conferences and symposia across the United States while maintaining an active acting career. He was a spokesperson for both the International Association of Firefighters [IAFF] and the International Association of Fire Chiefs [IAFC] for firefighter health and safety, and was honored over the years with numerous awards and recognition. Mr. Mantooth, we tip our hat to you for your role in our profession. Rest easy.

Today, EMS Week 2026 comes to a close. We currently have 4 employees that are finishing up Paramedic school, a couple that just finished, and they're eager to start their EMS careers. New EMTs as well. And some of us have been here longer that we'd care to mention! We are really grateful for everyone that is willing to give of themselves to the community of Scotland County. It's not a glamorous job. And no one is working EMS to get rich. It's long hours in the hot, the rain, the cold, and sometimes the ice! And for that, we salute our employees! Thank you all for your commitment to our community!
