Yeshua is the Way Maker, Miracle Worker, Healer, Promise Keeper, Light in the Darkness.
Recently, a Brother in Christ had his “a** handed to him” for making a simple statement: that Yeshua loves and accepts all people regardless of race, religion, community, gender, or sexual identity.
The response was swift. The judgment was harsh. The condemnation was loud.
Yet I find myself asking a simple question:
Did these responses reflect the teachings of Yeshua?
In the Sermon on the Mount, Yeshua opened His ministry with words that continue to challenge the human heart:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.”
— Matthew 5:3-7
Notice who Yeshua blesses:
The merciful.
The meek.
The peacemakers.
Those who hunger for righteousness.
Not the self-righteous. Not the angry. Not those eager to condemn.
And later He teaches:
“Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged.”
— Matthew 7:1-2
Before we point to the faults of another, Yeshua asks us to examine our own hearts.
Before we condemn another person, Yeshua calls us to humility.
Before we claim to speak for Creator, Yeshua calls us to mercy.
This does not mean we must agree with every person, every belief, or every lifestyle.
It does mean we are called to LOVE.
It means we are called to compassion.
It means we are called to remember that every human being bears the breath of the Creator and possesses inherent dignity.
The tragedy of religion and dominations is not that people seek God.
The tragedy is that sometimes people become so convinced of their own righteousness that they forget the very heart of the message.
The Messiah did not spend His time embracing the powerful and rejecting the broken.
He moved toward those whom society rejected.
He sat with the outcast.
He touched the untouchable.
He loved those whom others believed were unworthy of love.
And so I leave you with the warning Yeshua gave to the religious leaders of His own day:
“Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess… For ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.”
— Matthew 23:25-27
This warning is not only for Christians.
It is for Jews.
It is for Muslims.
It is for Pagans.
It is for spiritual teachers.
It is for every one of us.
Whenever politics becomes more important than compassion.
Whenever ideology becomes more important than love.
Whenever fear becomes louder than mercy.
Whenever we polish the outside while neglecting the condition of the heart.
The call of Yeshua remains the same:
Open your heart.
Love your neighbor.
Show mercy.
Walk humbly.
Judge yourself before judging another.
For the Way Maker, Miracle Worker, Healer, Promise Keeper, and Light in the Darkness did not command us to hate.
He commanded us to love.
