I just had an amazing annual birthday journey back to my hometown of Provincetown,Mass. Every year, I take off some time in July to be off-call from birth doula work. Many people don’t know that my parents met in Ptown and I loved living there.
Once we moved to The Berkshires, our annual summer vacations were spent in Ptown. My sister and I were always encouraged to explore Commercial Street, alone and at night (!), while not even being into our double digits. And to my delight, those nights were pure magic. They were filled with an atmosphere of joy, freedom, laughter, witnessing beautiful and loving affection, glitter galore, and a ton of mystical drag queens, especial Cher!
And this year, to my delight, my bestie from my undergrad days at UMass Dartmouth, Dave, saw me walking on that very street. He swooped me up and we spent the time reminiscing. It’s crazy how 20 years have passed us, as he now lives on the opposite coast!
The following day, bright and early, I enjoyed my annul whale watch off the tip of Massachusetts. And lucky me, as a calf stayed with the boat for most of the time! That was just the gift that I needed to refuel, and be reborn, as I have a lot births to witness.
To this day, I have always felt the most safe in Ptown, which is why I will always continue my annual homecoming.
