💔 No family should have to experience a tragedy like this.
Eight-year-old Adrian Thompson tragically lost her life after choking during lunch at her elementary school in Texas. Her family's heartbreaking story is a devastating reminder of how quickly an ordinary moment can become a life-threatening emergency.
Choking can happen anywhere. At school, at home, in a restaurant, or during a family gathering. Recognizing the warning signs and knowing how to respond immediately can mean the difference between life and death.
A person experiencing severe choking may be unable to speak, breathe, or cough effectively. There may be little or no sound to alert others that something is wrong.
According to the American Heart Association's updated guidelines, when a child is experiencing severe choking, rescuers should alternate five back blows with five abdominal thrusts until the obstruction is cleared or the child becomes unresponsive. Have someone call 911 immediately. If the child becomes unresponsive, begin CPR, starting with chest compressions.
Every parent, educator, childcare provider, and community member should have the knowledge and confidence to recognize an emergency and respond when seconds matter most.
Our hearts are with Adrian's family as they share her story in hopes of preventing another tragedy.
Please take a moment to watch and share this story. The knowledge you gain today could save someone's life tomorrow.
Awareness matters. Training matters. Every second matters. ❤️
