Your gut microbiome is not one organism—and it is not simply a battle between good and bad bacteria.

It is an ecosystem containing bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other microorganisms that interact with one another, the food you eat, your intestinal lining, and your immune system.

Some of these microbes process fibers our own enzymes cannot fully digest. In doing so, they produce short-chain fatty acids, including butyrate, which helps nourish cells lining the colon.

There is no single perfect microbiome for every person, and one probiotic cannot recreate an entire ecosystem. Context, function, diet, medications, age, environment, and many other factors shape the community.

One practical way to support that ecosystem is to gradually include a wider variety of plant foods you tolerate. Variety matters—but more is not always better overnight, especially for a sensitive digestive system.

Gut motility is much more than whether you have a bowel movement every day.

It is the coordinated muscular activity that moves and mixes food throughout the digestive tract. Different patterns help propel contents forward, mix them with digestive secretions, and bring nutrients into contact with the intestinal surface.

Too slow, and contents may linger. Too fast, and the body may have less time to absorb nutrients and reclaim water. Healthy motility is about the right pace and pattern—not simply making everything move faster.

The nervous system, hydration, daily movement, meal rhythm, medications, hormones, and illness can all influence that process.

A simple foundation is gentle movement, such as a short walk after a meal. Ginger has also traditionally been used to support healthy digestive movement, though it is not a universal answer for every pattern.

I’m heading back to Mt. Airy Orchards in Dillsburg this Saturday for their Peach Festival & Craft Show, and I’m so excited to be part of another wonderful summer market where the weather is forecasted for a BEAUTIFUL day.

Come spend the morning at the orchard, pick some fresh peaches, enjoy live music and breakfast, browse the craft market—and stop by Bohemian Botanicals Apothecary to say hi!

I’ll have my handcrafted herbal teas & aromatherapy favorites, along with plenty of summery blends to sip your way through the rest of the season.

And since it’s the Peach Festival, this feels like the perfect weekend to grab some Peach Sunset Herbal Tea, which will be on tap for sampling as a delicious mocktail too.

Digestion and absorption are not the same thing.

Digestion breaks food into smaller components. Absorption moves those components across the intestinal lining and into the body's circulation.

Most of that absorption happens in the small intestine, whose surface is covered in folds, villi, and microscopic microvilli. Together, those structures create a tremendous amount of surface area for nutrients to make contact with absorptive cells.

Many nutrients enter the bloodstream. Many dietary fats first travel through the lymphatic system. Either way, this is the step that allows nutrients from a meal to leave the digestive tract and become available to the rest of the body.

That is why nutrition is not only about what is on your plate. It is also about the entire process that makes those nutrients usable.

Did you know most nutrient absorption happens in the small intestine rather than the stomach?

Bile is one of the most misunderstood parts of digestion.

It is made by the liver—not the gallbladder. The gallbladder stores and concentrates it, then releases it into the small intestine when it is needed.

Its job is a little like dish soap on a greasy pan. Bile does not digest fat by itself. It disperses large fat droplets into much smaller ones, creating more surface area for fat-digesting enzymes to work.

That process also supports absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K.

This is a perfect example of digestion working as a team: bile prepares the fat, enzymes break it down, and the small intestine absorbs the resulting nutrients.

Your body cannot absorb an entire meal exactly as you ate it.

Before those nutrients can be used, the food has to be broken into much smaller components—and digestive enzymes help do that work.

Think of enzymes like tiny scissors. Different enzymes specialize in carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, gradually cutting those larger molecules into forms the body can absorb.

And enzymes are not just something you buy in a bottle. Your body produces them in your saliva, stomach, pancreas, and small intestine.

This is another reason digestion works best as a sequence. Chewing, stomach acid, enzymes, bile, and the small intestine each contribute something different.

One simple place to start: slow down and chew thoroughly. Your stomach is not a blender, and giving it smaller, well-mixed pieces makes the next stage easier.

One of the biggest misconceptions I see online is that every digestive symptom has one simple explanation.

The reality is usually much more nuanced.

Stomach acid plays an important role in digestion. It helps break down protein, supports the release of certain nutrients from food, and signals the next stages of digestion.

When people experience bloating, fullness, or heartburn, it's tempting to assume they know the cause.

But symptoms alone rarely tell the whole story.

The same symptom can have multiple possible contributors, which is why understanding how the digestive system works is often more helpful than trying to label yourself based on one post or one article.

One of the things I hope this series does is encourage curiosity instead of quick assumptions.

The better we understand the body, the better questions we can ask.

Heartburn is one of those symptoms that almost everyone has experienced—and it's also one of the most misunderstood.

A common assumption is that it automatically means there's too much stomach acid.

The reality is a little more nuanced.

Stomach acid plays an essential role in digestion. It helps break down protein, supports nutrient absorption, and signals the next steps of digestion.

The stomach is designed to handle that acid.

The esophagus isn't.

So while heartburn tells us that stomach acid has reached the esophagus, it doesn't automatically explain why that happened.

That's an important distinction.

One of the things I hope this series does is encourage us to move beyond quick assumptions and start asking better questions about how the body works.

Understanding the process often leads to better conversations—and better support.

Have you ever noticed that your digestion seems completely different when you're stressed?

Maybe your appetite disappears.

Maybe your stomach feels unsettled.

Maybe everything just feels... off.

There's a reason for that.

Your body is constantly deciding where its energy needs to go.

When it senses danger—or even ongoing stress—it shifts into survival mode.

From an evolutionary perspective, that makes sense. If you're escaping danger, digesting lunch isn't the most urgent task.

The challenge is that our modern stressors—deadlines, busy schedules, financial worries, constant notifications—can activate many of the same physiological responses.

Over time, that can influence how well digestion functions.

This doesn't mean stress is the only factor affecting digestion, but it does remind us that our nervous system and digestive system are closely connected (and often times the root cause of other issues we have going on!).

That's why supporting health often means looking beyond individual symptoms and considering how the body's systems work together.

One of the biggest shifts in how I think about health came when I stopped looking at body systems as separate.

Digestion isn't just about your stomach.

It's how your body breaks down food, absorbs nutrients, and provides the raw materials every other system depends on.

That's why someone struggling with digestion might also notice changes in their energy, skin, immune function, or overall sense of well-being.

It doesn't necessarily mean digestion is the only factor, but it often means it's an important place to start looking.

This interconnected view is one of the reasons I love herbalism.

Instead of only asking, "What symptom are we trying to address?"...we also ask, "Which body systems could use support?"

When we strengthen the foundation, the rest of the body has a better chance to function the way it was designed to.

That's exactly why we're spending time understanding digestion before we move on to other systems.
