🎶 Sometimes music therapy looks like meeting the client were they are at even if its sitting on the floor with a guitar.

But within that moment, we may be working toward something much bigger. ❤️

Music can be intentionally used to support:
🎵 Communication
🎵 Attention & engagement
🎵 Emotional regulation
🎵 Social connection
🎵 Self-expression

Our therapists meet each client where they are, using music that is meaningful to them to work toward their individualized goals.

Because the goal isn’t to teach someone how to be musical.

The goal is to use music to help them connect, communicate, participate, and grow. 🎶

🎒🎶 What’s on YOUR kid’s back-to-school playlist?!

Around our house, apparently getting ready for a new school year requires the perfect soundtrack. 😂

Music can be such a fun tool for helping kids prepare for transitions, build routines, regulate emotions, and get excited about what’s coming next. And heading back to school is one BIG transition!

So we asked our kids to pick their official Back-to-School Songs… and their choices did not disappoint. 🎧😂

Now we want to hear yours!

👇 Ask your kid: “If you could pick ONE song for your back-to-school playlist, what would it be?”

Drop their answer in the comments! 🎵✏️🍎

Communication doesn’t always sound like words 🎶

One of the biggest misconceptions about communication is that it has to be verbal.

Today, we explored a farm-themed music activity where my client made choices by selecting different animals to add to our song. While she is non-speaking, she clearly communicates her preferences and decisions in ways that are purposeful.

Making choices is more than picking a picture. It’s building independence, expressing wants, participating in conversations, and developing confidence that your voice, in whatever form it takes, matters.

In music therapy, we meet each person where they are. Through music, visual supports, and meaningful opportunities to choose, we’re helping clients strengthen communication skills in ways that feel motivating and successful.

Every choice is communication.
Every response deserves to be heard.

💙 That’s the power of music therapy.

What an amazing day! SWAMTA’s conference out did itself. We are walking away with fresh music experiences and tons of ideas.

It was a joy to participate in the internship fair and meet the future of our profession, reconnect with past interns and colleagues who have moved through our site, and celebrate their growth.

If you would have told college me this is were I’d be now I wouldn’t believe you. Also, I realized I’ve been in the profession almost decade 🫣

Our long-standing vision has been to bringing advocacy and education to East Texas and delivering specialized services in rural areas.

Events like this remind me why it’s crucial to expand access to specialized care for clients who otherwise have few local options. 🎶
