💚 Dementia care is much more than knowing someone has memory loss. The caregiver has to understand that the person’s brain is processing the world differently, and behavior can sometimes be their way of communicating a need.

Someone may become agitated because they’re in pain, frightened, hungry, thirsty, tired, overstimulated, constipated, uncomfortable, confused about where they are, or simply unable to explain what they need. That’s why patience and observation matter so much.

There are also many small caregiving techniques that can make a huge difference: approaching from the front, introducing yourself even if you’ve met many times, using short and simple directions, giving one choice at a time, avoiding arguments or repeatedly correcting them, maintaining familiar routines, watching facial expressions and body language, and allowing extra time for them to respond.

And something I’d really like us to include in your future educational materials is:

“Behavior is communication.”

Instead of immediately thinking, “Why are they acting like this?”, caregivers can learn to ask, “What might this person be trying to tell me

Help us bring smiles, laughter, music and joy to our senior community! 👧🏽👦🏽💃🏽🕺🏽👵🏽👴🏽

Eve’s Angel Private Care LLC is inviting children to participate in our Smiles for Seniors – A Joyful Dance Celebration on Saturday, October 3rd at 2:15 PM at Our Lady of Consolation in West Islip.

❤️ Give us just ONE HOUR, ONE DAY to help make our seniors smile and create a beautiful memory they can treasure.

🎁 Every participating child will receive a complimentary thank-you gift!
👨‍👩‍👧 Children must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or responsible family adult age 19 or older for the entire event.
👕 And if we get a nice little group together with enough time before the event, I would love to have special T-shirts made for our participating children to wear!
