Did you know Little Canada used to have a successful ice cream business? Vanderbie's Ice Cream was the largest ice cream manufacturer in Saint Paul. The Vanderbie's owned property that first belonged to Ben Gervais! The log cabin was used for farm workers to bunk in until it burnt down in 1913. J.C. Vanderbie rebuilt a farmhouse over the original spot of the log cabin for his workers that is still there today. J.C. was tragically killed in a barn accident when a bale fell on him, but his family kept the business going; in fact, Noel Drive and Allen Street are named after the nephews of J.C. who took over running the business. The business had a large manufacturing plant in downtown St. Paul until it was sold to Formost Ice Cream which unfortunately went bankrupt the following year.
