The Dr. Joseph H. Bates Preventive Medicine residency program is named in memory of Dr. Joseph H. Bates, MD, MS, a public health hero and staunch proponent of Preventive Medicine, whose career in medicine and public health spanned over 5 decades.

The mission of the program is to equip physicians with public health knowledge and skills to promote disease prevention and improve health for Arkansans at individual and population levels, meet eligibility for American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) board certification in the specialty of Public Health and General Preventive Medicine (PHGPM) after completion of the residency training, and connect trainees with potential areas of relevant practice.

The program is a joint venture between Arkansas Department of Health; UAMS College of Medicine Department of Family and Preventive Medicine; and UAMS College of Public Health and is funded by Arkansas Department of Health through state to***co tax dollars.
