“My soul is tired. I can’t do another winter on the streets.”💔
I met “Anna” on Tuesday at the day shelter. She didn’t know me, I didn’t know her. She’d been wearing the same black shirt for 4 days, so we found her a purple cardigan before heading to court. 🧡

She nodded off in my passenger seat on the way. Security took her nail clippers, tweezers, and lighter. Small things, but when you have nothing, they mean something. I put them in my car.

She told me it was the first time she’d come to court without being arrested first. She’s tired of going to jail.

My job right now is to help her learn to trust my presence and meet her immediate needs. I’m not asking questions I haven’t earned the right to ask, and I’m not going anywhere. ❤️‍🩹

Her public defender couldn’t find her on the docket. The judge and clerk were already standing to leave, but the PD asked them to look again, and they sat back down. Six cases, all set for Monday. I gave her a high five and told her she did so good by getting here.

Back at the car, she picked up a penny. “My parents are here with me.” 🪽

There’s my door.

Her dad died in a DUI accident, her mom of an overdose, both before she was 16. She’s been addicted to opioids since 15. She hasn’t seen her 11-year-old daughter in 4 years.

I told her I was hungry (she said she wasn’t, but I knew better), and we sat in a parking lot eating Oreo McFlurries while she told me the rest. She’s terrified of getting sober: the physical pain, and the emotional pain that will flood in once she stops numbing. But her desire not to sleep outside again is growing stronger than her fear.

This is the dilemma peers face. Stable housing helps you stay clean. But you can’t keep housing unless you’re clean.

On Monday, I’ll advocate for treatment instead of a sentence. Maybe a “nudge from a judge” is the answer to her prayers.🙏

When I look at her, I see my own 16-year-old daughter, who deserves compassion, ice cream, and a hand to hold through the darkness. 💔
