Calling all archaeology fans (look, don’t touch)! 🏺

Ever wanted a front-row seat to the past? The BLM Ridgecrest Field Office is teaming up with California Archaeological Site Stewardship Program (CASSP) to train new volunteer site stewards, and the first step happens from your couch.

Part one is a free online classroom session on Saturday, Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. You’ll hear from BLM law enforcement, Ridgecrest Field Office staff, and CASSP on local archaeology (spoiler: people have lived here for a very long time), cultural resources in the Ridgecrest Field Office, desert safety, the laws around cultural resources, and Native American concerns.

Complete part one and you’ll be a candidate for part two, an in-person field exercise in February 2027 where the classroom meets the dirt and sunshine.

Time machine not included. Register here: https://ow.ly/pvxn5101Ntu

Ever wondered what it’s like to help uncover the stories left behind on California’s desert landscapes? 🏜️

The BLM Barstow Field Office is looking for volunteers to support archaeological field surveys, documentation, and hands-on stewardship of cultural sites on public lands. You’ll work alongside professional archaeologists, discover local history, and get a firsthand look at how archaeology works in the federal government.

No experience needed. Training is provided, and anyone 18+ with an interest in archaeology, history, or cultural resources is welcome to join.

Fieldwork happens outdoors on uneven terrain and in varying weather, so come ready for an adventure.

When we launched our free paid limited edition postcard in 2020 we made custom stamps honoring little-known feminist architect Alice Constance Austin with images of her cameo and her Rose Residence architectural model, both captured at Llano del Rio and discovered during a Beinecke Library visiting research fellowship.

On June 16, 2020, the USPS put an end to the custom stamp program.

We are still crushed about it.

Postage for a 4x6 postcard today is an impressive $0.65! 📈

Why not give our mail workers a break and bring your ballot to a collection box while waiting for our geocache restock announcement.
