When the Backpack Becomes a Black Hole

Does your childโ€™s backpack come home with everything except the one thing they actually need? Papers get crumpled, supplies disappear, and important items somehow end up buried at the bottom.

Keeping a backpack organized can involve remembering, sorting, planning, and knowing where everything belongs.

Try these strategies to support your child:
โœ” Give important school supplies, folders, and papers a specific place in the backpack.
โœ” Use a simple visual checklist to remind your child what needs to come home each day.
โœ” Try color-coding folders or materials to make items easier to find.
โœ” Set aside a regular time to empty, sort, and reorganize the backpack.
โœ” Practice the organization system together until your child becomes more familiar and confident with it.

At Stepping Stones Pediatric Therapy, our therapists help children develop skills that support organization, independence, and participation at home and school.

What is the most unexpected thing youโ€™ve found in your childโ€™s backpack? Share it below!

Tuesday Therapy Tip: Turn an Obstacle Course Into a Movement Challenge!

Obstacle courses are a fun way to give your child opportunities to practice motor planning, organizing, carrying out, and adjusting movements to reach a goal.

Try creating a simple course at home with safe household items like pillows, cushions, and tape lines!

Have your child:
๐ŸŸข Crawl under a chair
๐ŸŸก Step over a pillow
๐Ÿ”ต Walk along a taped line
๐ŸŸ  Carry a toy to a designated spot
๐ŸŸฃ Complete the course in a specific order

Let your child help decide what comes next! As they become more comfortable, you can change the course or add a new challenge.

The goal isn't perfection. It's giving your child opportunities to think about how to move their body, navigate their environment, and try different movement strategies through fun, meaningful play.

Safety first! Choose sturdy, age-appropriate items, remove tripping hazards, and supervise your child throughout the activity. Always adjust activities to your child's abilities and needs.

What would you put in your child's obstacle course? ๐Ÿ‘‡

Weekend Win! ๐ŸŽ‰

This week, weโ€™re celebrating a BIG communication milestone with one of our amazing kids!

Our 4-year-old client used his AAC device to say โ€œgoโ€ for the very first time! ๐Ÿ™Œโœจ

For some, it may be just one little word, but we know that one word can be a HUGE step toward expressing wants, making choices, connecting with others, and having his voice heard. ๐Ÿ’™

AAC is a powerful tool that gives children another way to communicate, and we are so proud to see him discovering how he can use his device to share what he wants and engage with the world around him. ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ๐Ÿ“ฑ

Every new word, sound, sign, gesture, or message is worth celebrating. These moments are a beautiful reminder that progress can look different for every child, and every step forward matters!

We are SO proud of him and everyone who continues to support and encourage his communication journey. We canโ€™t wait to see what he says next! ๐Ÿ’™

Friday Local Resource: Assistive Technology New Hampshire (ATinNH)

Sometimes the right tools can make everyday activities more accessible and support greater independence, learning, and participation.

This Friday, weโ€™re highlighting Assistive Technology New Hampshire (ATinNH) through the UNH Institute on Disability. ATinNH helps people across New Hampshire discover and use assistive technology through ongoing resources and services.

ATinNH offers:
๐Ÿงฉ Equipment loans through its lending library, including short- and long-term loans
๐Ÿ”Ž Demonstrations to explore assistive technology options
๐ŸŽ“ Training and technical assistance to help turn assistive technology into real-world solutions
๐Ÿ”„ Reuse programs that expand access to assistive technology
โ™ฟ Resources supporting participation in areas such as education, independent living, employment, community, and recreation

Assistive technology can include a wide range of tools; from mobility equipment to reading software and other devices that help people live, learn, work, and connect more easily.

ATinNH also provides opportunities to try certain devices before making a purchase, which can help people explore options and find technology that meets their needs.

A valuable New Hampshire resource for exploring assistive technology and increasing access, independence, and participation.

When Getting Out the Door Takes Forever

Does getting your child ready to leave the house feel like a full-time job? Getting dressed, using the bathroom, managing mobility equipment, gathering medical supplies, packing essentials, or completing other daily care tasks can make even a simple trip feel like a lot.

Try these strategies to support your child:
โœ” Prepare what you can the night before, such as clothing, bags, equipment, or other essentials.
โœ” Break the getting-ready routine into smaller, manageable steps instead of tackling everything at once.
โœ” Use a visual checklist or sequence to help your child know what needs to happen before itโ€™s time to leave.
โœ” Give your child extra time when possible, especially when dressing, transfers, mobility, or other care routines take longer.
โœ” Celebrate your childโ€™s participation and independence, even when they are only able to complete part of a task.

At Stepping Stones Pediatric Therapy, Inc., our therapists help families find individualized strategies that support participation and independence in everyday routines, making daily activities more manageable for both children and caregivers.

What part of getting out the door takes the most time for your family? Share your experience below!

Tuesday Therapy Tip: Making Foot Placement Part of Play ๐Ÿฆถ๐Ÿป๐ŸŽฏ

When a childโ€™s feet turn inward while walking, there may be more to consider than foot position alone. Balance, coordination, body awareness, and the way a child moves their weight from one foot to the other can all play a role in how they move.

Play-based activities can give children opportunities to practice these skills in a fun and engaging way.

Try this:
โญ• Tap targets with the heel to encourage purposeful foot placement
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Move the foot through a target to practice accuracy and coordination
๐Ÿฆต Hold a balance position on one foot to challenge stability
โฌ†๏ธ Practice lifting the toes while standing to encourage awareness of how the foot contacts the floor

You can make these activities more engaging by using colorful rings, floor markers, or other simple toys your child enjoys. Start with activities that match your childโ€™s current abilities and provide support when needed.

The goal isn't simply to change the way a childโ€™s feet look. Therapy can help children develop the balance, coordination, strength, and movement skills they need to participate more confidently in everyday activities.

Every child develops differently, and activities should be individualized based on their needs and abilities.

Does your child have difficulty with balance, foot placement, or walking? Tell us below! ๐Ÿ‘‡

UPLIFTING STORIES: Collette Divitto ๐ŸŒŸ

Collette Divitto is an entrepreneur, baker, and disability advocate who turned a love for baking into a businessโ€”and then used her success to help open doors for others. ๐Ÿช๐Ÿ’™

Born with Down syndrome, Collette grew up loving to bake. As a young adult, she wanted to find a job but faced repeated rejection.

Instead of giving up, Collette decided to create her own opportunity.

In 2016, she founded Collettey's Cookies. What began with her passion for baking grew into a successful business and became part of a much bigger mission: helping people with disabilities find opportunities to work, lead, and build independent lives.

Collette's story is an important reminder for children that being different does not mean dreaming smaller.

Every child has unique talents, interests, and strengths. Sometimes, those strengths just need the right opportunity to shine. ๐ŸŒŸ

For families, Collette's journey reminds us to encourage children's interests, celebrate their abilities, and give them opportunities to participate, contribute, and discover what they can accomplish.

And perhaps most importantly, Collette shows us that when we create opportunities for ourselves, we can use them to create opportunities for others, too.

Your differences can be part of what makes your story special.

Dream big. Believe in yourself. And never be afraid to find your own path.
