Many years ago, when Killian was maybe 4, FARE launched the Teal Pumpkin Project. Fortunately, for us we lived in a nice, close-knit community. Our neighbors all knew Killian and his allergy so each year they had a special treat waiting for him!
We really didn't have to depend on the Teal Pumpkin Project so much until we moved away. Killian was always so excited to get all kinds of neat things that weren't food, I don't think he ever truly felt "left out". In addition, we made up our own tradition of "The Great Pumpkin". We would allow Killian to keep 5 pieces of safe candy (for him, it was usually Twizzlers or skittles). The rest of the candy would go in a big bucket on the porch at bedtime. By morning, The Great Pumpkin had taken all of the candy in exchange for a new toy. Very similar to "The Switch Witch" but a cooler name kind of like a superhero βΊοΈ. This worked so well we continued on with it as we had more children, with no allergies.
If you're a Halloween participating family and you want to be more inclusive (and give out less dyes and sugars!) check out the Teal Pumpkin Project below!
