Living with the Seasons: Learning to Be Still
Today I went for my second float therapy session.
After my first experience, I wanted to give it another try. This time, I was less nauseated, which was encouraging. But I also made myself an excellent cup of coffee that morning, and with my float scheduled for 9:15 a.m., relaxing wasn’t quite as easy as I had hoped!
As I lay there floating in warm salt water, with nothing to do and nowhere to be, I noticed something funny.
Instead of simply enjoying the experience, my mind was busy trying to figure out how to get the most out of it.
Apparently, I was trying to be productive even while doing absolutely nothing!
Afterward, I came across this quote:
“The self work that you do in silence will echo throughout every part of your life.” — Michell Clarke
It made me think about how we approach rest.
We’re so accustomed to measuring our days by what we accomplish that even relaxation can become another task to master.
As I move through this season of my life, I’m learning that not every experience needs a goal or an outcome. Sometimes the value is simply in showing up, being present, and allowing ourselves to experience something without expectations.
My second float wasn’t perfect, but I enjoyed it more than my first. And I plan to try again.
Perhaps the lesson isn’t about learning how to relax perfectly.
Perhaps it’s about learning that I don’t have to.
Sometimes doing nothing is exactly what we need to practice.
Do you find it difficult to simply sit still and do nothing?
