Brogan's Battle

Brogan's Battle Brogan is a 2025 Graduate of Nicholls State University, living and thriving with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy!

Duchenne is a form of Muscular Dystrophy, an illness that affects all the muscles in the body. Progressive muscle weakness leads to serious medical problems, particularly issues relating to the heart and lungs. It used to be said that those diagnosed with Duchenne would likely not live passed their twenties. But, with better research and standards of care, boys and girls with Duchenne are living l

onger and very fulfilling lives. The aim of this page is to share Brogan’s story and all of the triumphs and tribulations of living a life with Duchenne, to show that a diagnosis, does not have to define a person, and that living a full and meaningful life is possible no matter your circumstances. We also hope to raise awareness for Duchenne and the disability community.

Today is Brogan's Birthday.
He turns 23!
He's the same age I was when I had him; how crazy is that!
Please take a moment to send him some birthday love.
Contrary to the song lyrics, I think people still like you when you're 23. πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‚
And a quick update . . . .
Brogan started a paid summer internship the week at Where Y'At Magazine here in New Orleans.
He goes in to the office once a week and works from home one day a week.
Brogan's arm has healed up well. He is still wearing the brace as he likes, but has almost gotten fully back to regular activities. He has a physical therapy appointment today; hopefully the last one. 🀞
Also, I, Brogan's mom, have taken a step back from social media. So, I'm just popping on only to make this post just to keep Brogan's community and followers updated.
Sending our love and thanks for continuing to follow Brogan's Battle. ❀️

Brogan's follow-up with Ortho was today. They took another set of x-rays and their has been no displacement. Good News!
He got his hard cast today, and he'll have this one for one week.
He has another follow up appointment next Monday. They'll remove the cast, get a final set of xrays, and re-cast. Then he'll have that final cast for 3 more weeks.
The cast is pretty short and his fingers are completely out. So, he's happy with that.

Brogan had a fall on Tuesday, and hurt his right wrist.
I brought him to the ER for xrays and he did have a distal radius fracture. They splinted his arm in the ER and told us Ortho would call to make an appointment.
The Ortho appointment was yesterday afternoon. After reviewing the xrays again, they re-splinted the arm. They want to allow for swelling for another week or so and to make sure the fracture does not become displaced.
He'll go back on the 13th for more xrays and they will then make a decision about a cast.
He WILL be getting a cast, just not till the next appointment.
He cannot lift, push, pull, or bear any weight with the lower right arm right now. Nothing heavier than a coffee mug.
Brogan relies heavily on his arms, especially his right one, as he is right handed. This injury is limiting him even more so. He's needing help with getting out of bed, meal prep, toileting, showering; he's basically got one arm right now.
I'm not sure why I've delayed making this; I guess I've just been trying to come to terms with it and what it means for us right now.
But in true Brogan fashion, he hasn't complained at all, and is determined to still do what he can for himself, even if it's harder. I have to remind him that I'm here and I can help.
He says his splint and wrapping looks like a boxing glove.
Gotta love to optimism.
I guess that's it for now.
I'll update again after his next appointment.
And I'll keep trying to take my lead from Brogan, and take this road bump in stride.

I know it's been a bit quiet on our end lately.
Just wanted to give a quick update.
Brogan has an article in the Spring Edition of the St. Bernard Magazine. So, if you're St Bernard local, make sure to get a copy and check it out. If you're not local, I've included a couple photos and the link to the magazine's website where you have look through the current issue.
Also, Brogan is still on the hunt for permanent employment. And to that end, he is shadowing for the day at Fox8 in New Orleans today.
Send him all the good vibes!

Life is looking quite a bit different lately. So to get out of the house and do something put of the norm, we went to Trivia Night at one of our local bars.
We didn't win (wound up in 4th place) because we bombed on the last round.
There were drinks, oysters, and too many unanswered questions (at the end).
But we got out, did something fun, and made a new memory.
Only picture from the night . . .

Another
We are in Athens, AL again, staying the night here on our way back home.
Brogan had his opthalmology appointment this morning and we started our drive down right after that.
On our way down to Athens, we stopped in Louisville to see the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory ⚾️ Pics below.
We were supposed to make this stop last summer, but Brogan had that fall and broke his leg, and he was hurting too much to make the extra stop then. So glad we got to do it this time.
We'll sleep in tomorrow and head home after a late breakfast in morning.
The last pic is from dinner tonight.
We're currently flipping between ice skating and Indiana / Oregon game on TV.
We'll check in again at some point tomorrow.
