Pacifiers can be used as a tool and aren’t always bad. Many moms are concerned that pacifier use will inhibit their breastfeeding goals or cause “nipple confusion”. However, when it comes to breastfeeding, the main thing we should be concerned with is whether we are reading baby’s hunger cues appropriately. If we are misreading baby’s cues and offering the pacifier when they are really trying to tell us they are hungry, this is when breastfeeding can be compromised. When choosing pacifiers, I always recommend ones with a cylindric shape, which places baby’s tongue in a more natural position for feeding vs flat shaped pacifiers.

(1) Example: If your child says “doggie”, say “That’s a big doggie”. Elaborate and add in descriptive words.

(2)Example: If you want them to ask for another bite, say “More bite”. You can use gestures along with verbalizations.

(3)Example: If your child signs “more”, give them more and model what you want them to verbalize, “more bite.”

Did you know crying is actually a late-stage hunger cue? Recognizing your infant’s early cues can help create a more calming feeding experience for you and baby. When in doubt, feed your baby, especially in the early days. Cluster feeds can feel overwhelming, but it helps increase your supply and gives you and baby lots of practice.
