“When we made the decision to invest in new equipment, we ensured that it met the needs of our patient population and our community,” said UNC Health Southeastern President and CEO Chris Ellington. “This system has current technology to address patient concerns related to comfort while delivering very high-quality images for the best diagnostic outcomes possible.”

UNC Health Southeastern recently invested close to $2 million for a new MRI machine, which is uniquely designed to deliver a comfortable experience for patients along with exceptional image quality for physicians.

Nurses caring for newborns with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome noticed something striking; babies experiencing withdrawal cry differently than other infants.

Their cries seemed higher‑pitched, more intense, and uniquely patterned. This insight, born from years of bedside experience, sparked a research effort that is now bringing together the departments of OB/GYN, Pediatrics, and the Special Care Nursery to better understand Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome and improve care for families in our community.

UNC Health Southeastern will soon be at the forefront of a groundbreaking medical research project, one that began with a simple but remarkable observation made in the hospital’s Special Care Nursery.
