The scholars traveled either to Lumberton or Wilmington to work in teams on a community-defined quality improvement project. For Bestmann-Smith, working with UNC Health Southeastern was a turning point.

Her team conducted interviews with the cardiology clinic’s staff, patients and others in the community to understand the root causes that hinder patient retention and continuity of care.

“Realizing that to get to our shared goal — understand the problem and find a solution — we need to know who to ask in the room,” said Bestmann-Smith. “It became clear just how essential interprofessional collaboration is to meeting the unique needs of rural communities.”

Carolina, UNC Pembroke and UNC Wilmington collaborate on this program to address the state’s health workforce shortage.

On June 9, UNC Health Southeastern welcomed our 2026 junior volunteers into our health system. These 35 bright high school students will be serving in different departments throughout the Main Campus as well as some off-site locations until July 30.

Vice President & Chief Engagement Officer Patrick Ebri, PhD, kicked off the day with a formal welcome to the group. The welcome session consisted of a formal orientation to UNC Health Southeastern's policies and expectations, various department tours, and lunch with our Executive Team. District Career Coach Carol Hunt-Cummings, from the Public Schools of Robeson County's District Career Development Team, shared information about an initiative that will allow volunteer hours to count towards class credit. The Junior Volunteer Program consists of students from all PSRC high schools and PSRC Early College. We are excited to share knowledge of our day-to-day operations and the many professional opportunities that exist in the world of healthcare! Welcome to our One Great Team!

At UNC Health Southeastern, we often talk about “growing our own” and today is a perfect example of what that looks like in action.

We are proud to celebrate four team members who attended their first day of Nursing Services Orientation as newly licensed Registered Nurses. Their journeys reflect dedication, perseverance, and a commitment to serving our patients and community.

🎉 Congratulations to: (left to right)

• Anna Russ, RN – ICU, formerly an LPN on 7th Floor
• Dakota Johnson, RN – Resource Pool, formerly a Nursing Assistant in our Resource Pool
• Zachary Johnson, RN – Emergency Department, formerly a Nursing Assistant in our Resource Pool
• Inga Locklear, RN – Emergency Department, formerly a Paramedic with Med Care Ambulance Service

These individuals represent the very best of our organization. They chose to build their careers here, advanced their education while serving our patients, and are now stepping into new roles as Registered Nurses.

We could not be more proud of each of them and the example they set for others who aspire to grow within our health system. Investing in our people and supporting their professional development is how we strengthen our workforce and continue providing exceptional care to our community.

Other current employees that are newly licensed RN’s attending orientation on another date are Eugene Stanley, Sarah Grace Pait, Kailey Gause, Selena Head, Kristen Bowman, and Jesenia Perez Garcia.

Please join us in congratulating these outstanding nurses on this exciting milestone! 💙

Feeling tired all the time has become a common part of modern life, but constant fatigue is not something you should ignore. Understanding the cause of your tiredness is the first step toward feeling better. Fatigue can generally be grouped into several main categories: lifestyle, stress, nutrition, medical reasons, and psychological reasons.

Please join us in celebrating Jennifer Myers, RN of our Labor & Delivery team for earning her National Certification in Electronic Fetal Monitoring (C-EFM)!

This nationally recognized certification demonstrates advanced expertise in fetal heart rate monitoring, interpretation, and the care of mothers and babies during labor and delivery. Achieving this credential reflects a strong commitment to patient safety, clinical excellence, and lifelong learning.

Even more impressive, this is Jennifer’s second national certification. She previously earned her certification in Inpatient Obstetric Nursing (RNC-OB®), highlighting her dedication to providing exceptional care to the families we serve.

We are incredibly proud of Jennifer’s accomplishments and grateful for the knowledge, compassion, and professionalism she brings to our team each day. UNC Health Southeastern nurses leading the way. Please help us congratulate her on this outstanding achievement! 💙👶🩺

Teammate spotlight: Meet Ashley, with our EVS team.

During leadership rounds, several patients have recognized Ashley by name and gone out of their way to share how much her kindness and positivity mean to them.

One patient recently said: "It really makes a difference when everyone comes in with a positive outlook, even though I am sick. Even Ashley, the housekeeper, tells me how happy she is to see me each day, and that alone makes me feel better."

Ashley also takes the time to write her name on patients' whiteboards and adds a heart beside it, a small gesture that has made a big impact on those we serve.

Moments like these remind us that every interaction matters and that compassionate care extends far beyond clinical treatment. We are so proud to have Ashley as part of our 5 South family. She is a wonderful example of our One Great Team culture and the difference a caring heart can make every day. 💙👏

With age comes wisdom. Many adults can quickly observe when they are feeling under the weather.
