Feeding Foundations OT was created with intention. As a feeding therapist working for a larger clinic, I saw gaps in therapy that I felt was detrimental to supporting families and progress.

We work to ensure our feeding therapy is effective, and that it is designed to support families through feeding challenges.

To us that means focusing on feeding, involving families, and offering therapy at more flexible schedules that are built on family needs and therapeutic needs of our clients.

Floor time! Most under rated intervention.

All babies need it. It should be fun and comfortable for babies to move and explore. Babies should be able to tolerate all different positions such as being on their tummy’s, being on their side and being on their back.

Don’t let reflux hold your baby back from getting floor time! Floor time can be super helpful for reflux especially when paired with therapy and given specific therapeutic exercises to work on.

A blanket on the floor is often enough. Don’t over complicate it. Get the floor time in!

If you’re having an issues with floor time reach out to an infant OT or PT.

We hear “I knew something wasn’t right” far too often in our evals. Those parents who kept looking for answers even if they were told everything is “fine”.

We are helping you put all the pieces together.
We are taking a full body wholistic approach.
We believe all babies deserve to be comfortable. We believe all babies should enjoy feeding.
And we believe feeding should not be painful (for anyone).

I wish I could go back in time and help this baby (she’s mine) and her mom (that would be me.) this work means so much to me because I was there. Providers telling me everything was fine. I was written off. I left a lactation visit feeling lower than low. I got into this work to do my best to make sure that doesn’t happen to other moms. We are here to listen. We are here to support you.

Feeding therapy should not just happen at the table. Sometimes the most important work actually happens away from the table.

Feeding therapy needs a full body full system approach. We’re looking at posture, strength, mobility, sensory processing, self regulation, reflex integration, and so much more.

Did you know this?

I am almost always recommending we work to decrease the use of a swaddle or use of the snoo. As a parent I understand how precious sleep is and I want parents and babies to get to the best sleep possible. Better sleep means better regulation and usually better participation in home exercises programs! But we need to weigh the pros and cons. As a therapist I feel it’s my role to inform you. As a parent you get to decide what is more important to you as a family.

I do have cases that babies need to stop the use of these in order for us to see progress. They can have a significant impacts on infant development and feeding.

❌Snoo:
Restricting movement
Suppressing hunger cues
Impacting reflex integration
Abnormal/excessive sensory input

❌Swaddle
Restricting movement
Impacting reflex integration
Reinforcing asymmetric patterns

Picky eating doesn’t have to be something you struggle with. Mealtimes should be enjoyable for everyone.

For some kids exposure and low pressure is not enough.
We should be digging deeper:
⭐️oral motor skills
⭐️oral motor structures
⭐️sensory processing
⭐️posture
⭐️reflex integration
⭐️regulation

You are not a bad parent and you did not cause your child’s picky eating!

This happens to parents a lot! They are holding their baby upright so much that their babies are missing key developmental growth through floor time and movement which is making reflux symptoms worse.

Floor time should be happy, playful, and comfortable. If you’re struggling with floor time that’s where a feeding OT comes in. Identifying the reason for reflux, any movement patterns differences , any asymmetries, any oral function concerns can help identify treatments that will actually work. Not just “hold your baby upright forever…”

If you’re struggling with reflux symptoms reach out for a functional feeding evaluation.

I feel like I say this all the time but we should always be looking for the root cause, the reason. I truly believe kids will do (or eat) well when they can. If they can’t eat certain foods or won’t try new foods we need to figure out that why.

Progress with feeding therapy depends on it.

We should be looking at:
-posture
-strength
-motor skills
-reflexes
-regulation
-nervous system
-sensory processing
-oral motor skills
-oral structures
-past experiences
-current feeding environments
-and so much more!

I see the term “picky eating” getting thrown around a lot out there.

It’s true sometimes picky eating can be part of developmental expectations. But that’s not a reason to not seek out support.

If you’re struggling with how to manage picky eating of any kind you can always reach out for support. We can help identify the why and guide you through it to make the most out of this tricky stage.

Also sometimes picky eating is used to describe a feeding pattern that is more concerning and is impacting family, mealtimes, nutrition, and growth. It’s important to keep this in mind when speaking with others about this topic!

We may use the same term but not everyone’s experience is the same.
