Have you noticed your horse passing normal manure along with excess watery f***l material?

F***l Water Syndrome can be frustrating, and there isn’t always one simple answer.

For senior horses especially, it’s worth taking a closer look at the full picture: forage, dental health, feeding management, digestive health, and recent changes to the diet or routine.

In this Ask the Expert, we’re sharing a few brief tips on what to pay attention to and where to start.

And stay tuned, we’ll be diving deeper into F***l Water Syndrome in the near future.

It's not only what you feed, it's what the horse can utilize.

The Zinpro® ProPath® Advantage for Senior Horses.

Equi-Shine uses highly bioavailable organic trace minerals, including Zinpro® ProPath® Performance Minerals®, designed to deliver trace minerals such as zinc, copper, manganese, and iron in forms the horse can efficiently utilize.

For senior horses, this matters because trace minerals contribute to:
- Immune function
- Hoof integrity
- Skin and coat quality
- Tissue maintenance
- Antioxidant defenses
- Overall metabolic function

When feeding a senior horse, quality and bioavailability matter just as much as quantity.

As horses age, maintaining comfortable movement becomes an important part of supporting their overall quality of life.

Joint Ease is designed to provide nutritional support for joint comfort, cartilage health, and mobility, helping senior horses stay active in the ways that matter every day.

Joint support can influence more than just how a horse feels under saddle.

Joint Ease combines ingredients such as glucosamine, chondroitin, and yucca to support different aspects of joint health, from cartilage structure to a healthy inflammatory response.

For senior horses, the goal isn’t to wait until stiffness becomes severe.

It’s to support mobility as part of the bigger picture, alongside balanced nutrition, appropriate exercise, healthy body condition, regular hoof care, and veterinary oversight.

Support the joints that have carried them through the years.

Yucca + Glucosamine + Chondroitin = Nutritional Support for Mobility, Comfort & Healthy Aging

These three ingredients are commonly used to support senior horse joint health.

Yucca is a plant-derived ingredient commonly included in equine supplements to support overall comfort and a healthy inflammatory response.
-Contains naturally occurring compounds called saponins.
-Helps support the body's normal response to everyday inflammation and physical stress.
-May be especially useful for older horses experiencing normal age-related stiffness.
-Supports overall comfort, which can encourage continued movement and activity.
-Is often paired with other joint-support ingredients as part of a broader mobility program.
Why it matters for senior horses: As horses age, everyday wear and normal inflammatory processes can contribute to increased stiffness and reduced willingness to move. Supporting a healthy inflammatory response can help maintain comfort and encourage the regular movement that is so important for preserving mobility and muscle condition.

Glucosamine is a naturally occurring compound found in cartilage and connective tissues throughout the body.
-Provides nutritional building blocks associated with cartilage and joint structures.
-Supports normal cartilage maintenance and joint integrity.
-Helps support healthy joint function during everyday movement.
-Commonly used for horses experiencing increased joint wear from age, work, or previous activity.
-Works well as part of a long-term joint-support program rather than only being introduced after significant stiffness develops.
Why it matters for senior horses: As normal wear accumulates over time, nutritional support for cartilage and connective tissue can become increasingly important.

Chondroitin is another naturally occurring component of cartilage and is frequently paired with glucosamine in joint-support formulas.
-Helps support the structure and resilience of cartilage.
-Supports normal joint cushioning and function.
-Contributes to the joint's ability to manage everyday movement and physical stress.
-Complements glucosamine by supporting multiple aspects of cartilage health.
-Is commonly included in comprehensive mobility formulas for aging and active horses.
Why it matters for senior horses: Healthy cartilage helps joints continue functioning comfortably as the horse ages and normal joint wear increases.

Why Use Them Together?
Yucca, glucosamine, and chondroitin support different pieces of the mobility puzzle.
Together, they can be part of a broader senior-horse strategy that also includes appropriate exercise, healthy body condition, regular hoof care, veterinary oversight, and balanced nutrition.

Supporting mobility helps support quality of life.

Forage should remain the foundation of the horse's diet.

But as horses age, dental changes can make traditional long-stem fiber harder to chew and use efficiently.

The answer isn't less fiber; it may be a different form of fiber.

Older horses can develop uneven wear, missing teeth, periodontal disease, hooks, waves, and other dental issues that make chewing forage difficult.

Even the best nutritional program cannot fully compensate for a horse that cannot properly chew what you’re feeding.

We highly encourage regular veterinary dental examinations and watching for:
- Quidding/dropping feed
- Slow eating
- Long-stem fiber in manure
- Weight loss
- Bad breath
- Difficulty chewing

Senior horse nutrition starts before the feed ever reaches the stomach.

✅ Test forage
✅ Supplement gaps
✅ Keep them active

Every horse is unique in their metabolic diagnosis, but Stonewall Ponies- Emily Elek takes a straightforward approach to keep solutions simple.

Restricting calories and NSC doesn’t need to mean restricting nutrition overall.

Weight Loss Isn't a Diagnosis.

A senior horse that is losing weight may need a closer look at:
• Dental health - can they comfortably chew hay and feed?
• Forage intake and quality - are they consuming enough usable calories from fiber?
• Feeding frequency - would smaller, more frequent meals help?
• Calorie sources - would added fat or digestible fiber be more appropriate than simply increasing grain?
• Digestive health - are manure consistency or appetite changing?
• Parasite management
• Underlying health concerns

A weight tape and regular photos can help you catch gradual changes before they become obvious.

The goal is not to assume weight loss is inevitable with age. It is to recognize when your horse is changing and adjust the feeding and management program accordingly.

Need More Calories? Don’t Automatically Add More Grain

When an older horse starts losing condition, the first instinct is often to simply increase the grain.

But more grain is not always the best answer.

Before increasing the scoop, take a closer look at the entire feeding program.

Ask:
• Is the horse eating enough forage?
• Can they still chew long-stem hay comfortably?
• Are they being fed often enough throughout the day?
• Has their activity level changed?
• Is the current diet providing enough calories from fat and digestible fiber?
• Has there been a change in dental or overall health?

For senior horses that truly need more calories, increasing the fat portion of the diet can be a helpful way to add energy without relying solely on larger grain meals.

Fat is a concentrated source of calories and can help support body condition while allowing the feeding program to remain more forage-focused.

Highly digestible fiber sources may also be useful, especially for horses that are beginning to struggle with traditional long-stem forage.

The goal is not just to feed more.

It is to provide calories in a way that supports the senior horse’s digestive system, body condition, and overall health.

And remember, unexplained or significant weight loss should always be investigated with your veterinarian, especially in an older horse.
