Let’s clear up THREE of the biggest ones:
1. “But DPC doesn’t take insurance.”🪪
You can absolutely still use your insurance.
Our membership and the care included in it are not billed to insurance, but YOU CAN STILL USE YOUR INSURANCE for prescriptions, labs, imaging, specialists, the ER, hospital care, and anything else outside our office.
PPO plans generally work well alongside DPC, and yes — you can have MaineCare and be a Lionheart member, too. HMO plans limit which doctors you can see and typically require you to choose a primary care provider within their network, so they don’t work as well with DPC.

2. “But we hardly ever go to the doctor.” 🩺
Maybe. But think back over the last year — not just appointments, but all the times you had a question you would have loved to run by your doctor. A rash, fever, lingering cough, medication question, sports injury. Does this need to be seen? Can this wait? Is this normal?
And when your child DOES need to be seen, we often assume an appointment will be available when we need one.

3. “But I already pay so much for health insurance.”💸
Insurance and primary care do two different jobs. Insurance protects you from large medical expenses — hospitalizations, surgery, specialists, imaging, and major medical events.
But an insurance card doesn’t guarantee you an appointment, give you more time with your doctor, OR build a relationship with someone who knows your child.
And having insurance doesn’t mean you have to use it for everything. For many services, paying cash prices can actually be LESS expensive than going through insurance. At Lionheart, for example, we’ve negotiated affordable cash prices for lab testing to help keep those costs down.
