💡 Evidence-Based Strategies for Addiction & Family Recovery

I know what it’s like to feel powerless in the face of addiction. As a mother, I experienced the devastation of watching my own children struggle with substance use. I spent years caught between fear, frustration, and despe

ration—unsure of how to help them and exhausted from the chaos addiction brings into a family. I tried everything—tough love, pleading, ultimatums—but nothing seemed to work. It wasn’t until I discovered a different approach—one based on connection, compassion, and evidence-based strategies—that everything changed. My daughters found their path to recovery, and I found my calling: helping other families do the same. Today, as a Certified Professional ICF Life Coach, Family Recovery Specialist, and Behavioral Health Copywriter, I help parents and loved ones take actionable, effective steps to get their family members the help they need—without waiting for rock bottom. How I Can Help You
✔ Get your loved one into treatment—without forcing them or waiting for rock bottom.
✔ Set clear, compassionate boundaries that support long-term recovery without enabling.
✔ Stop feeling powerless and take back control of your family’s future.
✔ Heal from the emotional toll of addiction and rebuild trust with your loved one.
✔ Learn effective communication strategies that encourage change instead of resistance. You’re Not Alone—And There Is Hope
I’ve walked this path, and I know how overwhelming it can feel. But I also know there’s a way forward—a way that doesn’t rely on ultimatums or emotional detachment. Through a compassionate, structured approach, I’ll show you how to support your loved one’s journey to sobriety—while also taking care of your own emotional well-being. I can still hear the news anchor's voice from that day. Hollywood Hills celebrity burglaries. This time, her mother. Former Pl***oy centerfold speaks out.

I was in my kitchen. My gut tightened.

After that I didn't want to answer the phone. I didn't want to leave the house. Everybody had an opinion — my dad, my brother, the women at the grocery store, strangers on the street. Even the checkout ladies had a look.

Between 2009 and 2012 my daughter Alexis and Tess — who was part of our family, and who I treated like my daughter — both became addicted to he**in.

I loved them, and when I was terrified I tried to control everything I could. I pushed harder. I talked faster. I explained more. I believed that if I did enough, nothing terrible would happen.

I had spent tens of thousands of dollars on therapy by then. I could explain my patterns beautifully. What I could not do was be steady enough to live what I already knew.

That gap is the work I do now.

One of my daughters has three babies under five and another on the way. Her husband lost everything financially for them. They're on food stamps.

I've given them a lot of money and I can't keep doing it. There's nothing I can fix.

The version of me from ten years ago would not have survived that week. Calling everyone. Fixing it at my own expense. Awake at three in the morning building plans nobody asked for.

I'm not being neglectful and I'm not being cold. I'm okay, and I know they're going to be okay.

That sentence took me years, and I want to be precise about what changed. Not my circumstances — those are harder than they've been in a while. Not my love for her. What changed is that my system can hold this without collapsing, so I get to actually be useful to her instead of drowning next to her.

That's what becomes possible. It's quieter than people expect.

I used to walk through the world with my shoulders back, my eyeliner on, and my hair slicked back.

My armor. I was tough. Anger was my fuel and control was everything.

Nobody looking at me would have said there's a woman protecting herself. That's the thing about armor that works — it stops looking like armor, to you and to everyone else. It just looks like your personality.

It took me a long time to understand that I wasn't difficult, or too much, or not enough. My system had learned something early about what was dangerous, and it had been running on that ever since. Long before I had words for it.

This account is about what happens when that changes. Not through insight. Not through better scripts. Through a nervous system that stops treating ordinary life as something to survive.

Start here if any of that sounds like your own.

Boundaries were just where it showed up first.

The same thing that decides whether your answer holds also decides how present you are at dinner, how long a hard conversation follows you around, and how much of your own life you are actually in while it happens.

That is why this was never really about learning to say no. It is about how steady you are underneath everything — and steadiness is built from the moments you can stay in rather than the ones you get through.

You can know exactly what is happening and still watch it happen.

That is the part that convinces people they are the problem. The understanding is right there — you can name the pattern, explain where it came from, describe it to a friend over coffee. Then someone's voice changes and none of it is available to you.

More information was never going to fix that. What you know sits in one part of your brain. What takes over under pressure sits somewhere else.

There are moments when someone asks what you want and you genuinely do not know

Your attention may already be on their face

Their tone

What they want

How they might respond

Or what could happen if your answer disappoints them

When your nervous system is busy tracking all of that, hearing your own answer can become difficult

And even when you are clear about what you want, another challenge can appear

Will you say it?

Will you let your answer stand?

Will you follow through when someone becomes disappointed, angry, distant, or unwilling to accept it?

These are not simply communication problems

They are connected to what happens inside your brain, body, and nervous system when pressure appears

Greater Internal Steadiness helps you become clearer inside

It helps you hear yourself more easily

And when you know what you want, it helps you feel steady enough to say what you mean and follow through

Someone else can have feelings about your answer

And you can still feel okay inside your own body

I created the free training Why Boundaries Collapse Under Pressure to help you understand why knowing what you want can become difficult, why following through can become difficult, and what you can begin doing to correct both

Comment STEADY and I’ll send it to you

It is difficult to fully enjoy your life when part of you is always watching for what might go wrong

You may be having dinner with people you love

Working on something that matters to you

Taking a day off

Celebrating something good

Or finally having a quiet moment

And still notice part of your attention checking the room

Is everyone okay?

Did someone’s tone change?

Is there tension I need to fix?

Did I say something wrong?

Is something about to happen?

When your nervous system has learned to stay alert to other people’s reactions, it can be hard to relax into the life that is already happening around you

You may care deeply about the people in your life

But caring about them does not have to require constantly managing their feelings, predicting their reactions, or changing yourself to keep the connection safe

As greater Internal Steadiness develops, you can become more comfortable allowing other people to have their own feelings

They can disagree with you

Feel disappointed

Want something different

Or need time to work through their response

And you can still feel okay inside

That steadiness gives you more capacity to stay honest, remain connected, and let the relationship hold more truth

It also gives more of your attention and energy back to you

So you can be present for the people you love

Enjoy what is good

Create what matters to you

And experience more of the moments you do not want to miss

Why Boundaries Collapse Under Pressure

08/17/2026

A difficult conversation can end in a few minutes

But what happens inside you afterward can last for hours

You may continue feeling the tension in your chest

Notice yourself checking your phone

Wonder whether they are still upset

Or feel pulled to reach out and make sure everything between you is okay

Even when you know you were honest

Even when your answer still feels right

Even when nothing actually needs to be repaired

Your body may still be waiting for proof that the relationship, opportunity, or connection is safe

That can make it hard to return to the rest of your day

You are physically somewhere else

But part of your attention is still inside that conversation

Internal Steadiness can change what happens after the moment ends

Your body can begin settling without requiring the other person to agree with you first

You can care about how they feel without taking responsibility for changing it

You can give yourself time before deciding whether anything truly needs another conversation

And when your answer still feels true, you can let it stand

That means more of your energy becomes available for your work, your family, your plans, and the life that is happening in front of you

You do not have to spend the rest of the day trying to recover from being honest

Why Boundaries Collapse Under Pressure

Maybe your life looks fine from the outside, but it rarely feels easy inside.

You arrive somewhere and barely remember the drive.

You spend time with someone you love while part of your attention remains somewhere else.

You want to rest, but your mind keeps moving toward what needs to happen next.

You replay conversations and question what you said.

Your body tenses when someone's tone changes.

You begin preparing for what might happen before anything is clear.

You put off decisions because every choice suddenly feels risky.

You keep checking whether everything is okay instead of settling into the moment you are actually living.

These experiences may look unrelated.

But they can grow from the same protective system.

Your brain and body may have learned, in relationships and in your family, to stay alert to changes in tone, mood, distance, or expectation.

You may feel anxious or begin bracing before you consciously understand what has changed.

That bracing can shape what you notice, what you say, what you agree to, and how much of your own life you are able to experience while it is happening.

You may have lived this way for so long that it feels normal.

Your brain and body can learn new ways to feel steadier inside.

I teach specific brain-body and nervous-system practices that help people experience and progressively develop Internal Steadiness.

As that steadiness develops, it can become easier to:

know what you want;

think clearly;

say what you mean;

make decisions without immediately looking for everyone else's answer;

be present with someone you love;

recover after difficult moments;

and keep taking action toward what matters most.

This work reaches far beyond one boundary or one conversation.

It changes what becomes possible in your relationships, your family, your work, and the life you are building.

If you recognize yourself here, you are in the right place.
