Scripture: “For each one should carry their own load.” — Galatians 6:5 (NIV)
One of the greatest signs of growth in recovery is learning to take responsibility for our lives. Addiction often teaches us to blame circumstances, other people, or even ourselves in unhealthy ways. Recovery teaches a different path: honesty, accountability, and ownership.
Taking responsibility doesn’t mean carrying shame. Shame says, “I am the problem.” Responsibility says, “I have choices, and with God’s help, I can make different ones.” Through Christ, we are not defined by our past mistakes, but we are called to take ownership of our present actions.
When the prodigal son came to his senses, he stopped blaming others and acknowledged his own choices. That moment of responsibility became the first step toward restoration. God met him with grace, but only after he was willing to face the truth.
In recovery, responsibility means showing up when you say you will. It means working your program, being honest with your support system, making amends when necessary, and choosing obedience to God even when it’s difficult. Responsibility is not a burden meant to crush you; it is a pathway to freedom.
The good news is that God never asks us to carry our responsibilities alone. He gives us His Spirit, His Word, and a community of believers to strengthen us. As we faithfully carry the load God has given us today, He supplies the strength we need for today.
