Scripture: “For each one should carry their own load.” — Galatians 6:5 (NIV)

One of the greatest signs of growth in recovery is learning to take responsibility for our lives. Addiction often teaches us to blame circumstances, other people, or even ourselves in unhealthy ways. Recovery teaches a different path: honesty, accountability, and ownership.

Taking responsibility doesn’t mean carrying shame. Shame says, “I am the problem.” Responsibility says, “I have choices, and with God’s help, I can make different ones.” Through Christ, we are not defined by our past mistakes, but we are called to take ownership of our present actions.

When the prodigal son came to his senses, he stopped blaming others and acknowledged his own choices. That moment of responsibility became the first step toward restoration. God met him with grace, but only after he was willing to face the truth.

In recovery, responsibility means showing up when you say you will. It means working your program, being honest with your support system, making amends when necessary, and choosing obedience to God even when it’s difficult. Responsibility is not a burden meant to crush you; it is a pathway to freedom.

The good news is that God never asks us to carry our responsibilities alone. He gives us His Spirit, His Word, and a community of believers to strengthen us. As we faithfully carry the load God has given us today, He supplies the strength we need for today.

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” — Matthew 6:34

Recovery can feel overwhelming when we look too far ahead. Questions like “Will I stay sober next month?” or “How will I rebuild everything I’ve lost?” can create fear and anxiety. God never asks us to carry tomorrow’s burdens today. He simply asks us to trust Him with this moment.

When the Israelites traveled through the wilderness, God provided manna one day at a time. They couldn’t store up enough for the future; they had to depend on Him daily. Recovery works much the same way. We don’t recover for a lifetime all at once—we recover today. We make today’s healthy choice. We surrender today’s temptation. We trust God for today’s strength.

The enemy wants to pull our attention into the regrets of yesterday or the fears of tomorrow. Jesus calls us back to today. Right now, God’s grace is sufficient. Right now, His strength is available. Right now, His Spirit is with you.

If you’re struggling today, don’t focus on the next year. Focus on the next right step. Pray the next prayer. Make the next healthy decision. Reach out for help if needed. God specializes in guiding His children one step at a time.

Every day lived in surrender to Christ is a victory. Small victories become weeks, weeks become months, and months become years. But it all begins with today.

Patricia Littles – SERVANT LEADER and President of New Ground Discipleship

Patricia Littles is the President and founder of New Ground Discipleship, a Christ-centered ministry dedicated to helping people discover freedom, healing, and purpose through a relationship with Jesus Christ. With a heart for discipleship and a passion for recovery, Patricia has devoted her life to walking alongside others as they navigate life’s challenges and experience the transforming power of God’s grace.

The vision for New Ground Discipleship was born out of Patricia’s own journey of faith, recovery, and restoration. Having witnessed firsthand how God can redeem brokenness and bring hope to seemingly impossible situations, she felt called to create a ministry where people could find authentic community, biblical truth, and practical encouragement. What began as a burden to help others grow spiritually developed into a mission focused on making disciples who make disciples.

Under Patricia’s leadership, New Ground Discipleship seeks to provide a safe place where individuals can encounter Christ, deepen their understanding of Scripture, and build healthy relationships rooted in faith. The ministry emphasizes spiritual growth, accountability, recovery, and servant leadership, encouraging people to move beyond simply believing in Jesus to actively following Him.

Patricia believes that God specializes in new beginnings. The name “New Ground” reflects the promise found throughout Scripture that God is always doing a new thing, breaking up hard ground, and preparing hearts for growth and transformation. Through teaching, mentoring, devotionals, and discipleship groups, she encourages others to trust God’s process and remain faithful in their walk with Christ.

Today, Patricia continues to lead New Ground Discipleship with humility, compassion, and a deep commitment to seeing lives changed by the Gospel. Her greatest desire is to help people discover that no matter their past, God can cultivate new ground in their hearts and use their stories for His glory.

Scripture: “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.” — Ephesians 1:7

One of the most beautiful words in recovery is redemption. Redemption means to buy back, restore, rescue, and reclaim something that seemed lost. Addiction may have stolen years, damaged relationships, broken trust, and left deep wounds, but God specializes in redemption.

Many people in recovery carry regrets. They look back and wish they could undo the choices they made. While we cannot change the past, God can transform its impact. He takes broken pieces and creates a testimony. He takes pain and uses it for purpose. What the enemy meant for destruction, God can use for restoration.

Redemption does not mean there are no consequences. It means consequences do not get the final word. Through Jesus Christ, your failures are not your identity. Your addiction is not your identity. Your mistakes are not your identity. Your identity is found in being a redeemed child of God.

Consider the life of Apostle Paul. Before encountering Christ, he persecuted believers. Yet God redeemed his life and used him to spread the Gospel throughout the world. His past became part of his testimony, not a barrier to God’s purpose.

In recovery, redemption often happens one day at a time. Every sober day is a reminder that God is still working. Every repaired relationship is evidence of His grace. Every temptation resisted is proof that His power is greater than your past.

The cross is God’s declaration that no one is beyond redemption. Jesus paid the price to set us free from sin, shame, and bo***ge. When we surrender our lives to Him, He begins the lifelong process of restoring what has been broken.

Recovery teaches us many hard lessons, but patience may be one of the hardest. We live in a world that wants instant results—instant healing, instant change, instant freedom. We want the struggle to end today. We want the pain, cravings, broken relationships, and consequences to disappear overnight.

But God often works through process, not instant perfection.

Patience in recovery is learning to trust God while He is still working. It is choosing obedience even when you cannot yet see the outcome. It is waking up each day and taking the next right step, even when progress feels slow.

The enemy will whisper, “You should be further along by now.”
God says, “Keep going. I am still working in you.”

Patience is not passive waiting; it is active trust. It means continuing to pray when answers feel delayed. It means continuing to show up, to do the work, to stay accountable, to seek God, even when the breakthrough hasn’t fully come.

Think about a seed planted in the ground. For a season, nothing seems visible. But beneath the surface, roots are forming. Growth is happening where no one can see it. Recovery is often like that. God may be doing His deepest work in you in the hidden places.

James 1:4 says:
“Let patience have its perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”

Patience is producing something in you—strength, endurance, wisdom, and dependence on Christ.

If you feel frustrated with your pace today, remember this: delayed progress is not denied progress. Every sober day, every honest conversation, every surrendered prayer is evidence that God is moving.

You do not have to arrive all at once. You only have to remain faithful for today.
