One myth down. Therapy isn't what you've seen in movies, and for a lot of Black men, that misunderstanding is the only thing standing between them and real relief.

Sometimes the doubt isn’t about your ability. It’s about the environment.

Being the only one in the room changes how your nervous system shows up. That isn’t weakness. It’s adaptation.

If you’ve been questioning yourself, pause before you internalize it.

The question most people never stop long enough to ask themselves. Save this for the next time you need the reminder.

Many successful people don't dismiss therapy because they think it's unnecessary. They often hesitate because they've spent years learning that self-reliance is a virtue, vulnerability is risky, and asking for support should only happen when things become unbearable.

What if support didn't have to be a last resort?

Sometimes the most meaningful growth begins with a question, not an answer.

Which of these reflection questions resonates with you most?

The qualities that help us succeed are not always the qualities that help us heal.

Sometimes growth begins when we stop asking whether we're capable of handling everything alone and start asking whether we should have to.

Two anniversaries. One unresolved tension.

This BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month, I've been sitting with what it means to mark 250 years of American history alongside 160 years since emancipation. For many Black Americans, those numbers don't exist separately. They exist together, in the body, in the family, in the quiet labor of navigating a country still working out whether it meant what it said.

Healing, as I think about it clinically and personally, is not only individual. It is also historical. What we carry, how we carry it, and whether we have space to set any of it down are all shaped by things that happened long before we arrived.

If this resonated, save it, share it with someone who might need it, or leave a reflection below. This month and every month, I'm honored to do this work alongside the communities it's meant to serve.

One of the most common misconceptions about therapy is that it's only for people who are falling apart.

Many of the Black men I work with are successful, respected, and highly accomplished. They aren't seeking therapy because they're broken. They're seeking therapy because they've realized that carrying everything alone is no longer serving them.

The full blog explores why that realization can be so difficult and why it matters:

One of the hardest things a son can experience is realizing his father was never who he believed him to be.

Not because fathers must be perfect.
But because boys often build themselves around the image of their father.

So when that image breaks, identity can break with it.

Some men begin fighting parts of themselves afterward:
their emotions, vulnerability, anger, softness, dependency, even their own reflection.

They fear becoming their father.
Yet sometimes feel trapped carrying him internally.

That tension can quietly shape relationships, masculinity, emotional expression, and self-worth for years.

A father does not have to die for grief to exist.

Sometimes grief begins the moment the illusion ends.

If this resonates with you, you’re not alone.

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the enduring strength of Black communities.

As I reflect on this day, I find myself considering a question that extends beyond history and into our everyday lives:

What helps a person feel free?

Not just politically or socially, but emotionally.

Freedom can look like rest. Boundaries. Authenticity. Connection. The courage to live beyond expectations that were never ours to carry.

As we celebrate Juneteenth, I invite you to spend a few moments reflecting on what freedom means to you today.

What helps you feel free?
