Families considering senior living options should begin the process earlier than they may think.
Across the area, demand for independent living, assisted living, and memory care is rising significantly. I am currently seeing waitlists at levels I haven’t encountered in years—one local community has over 300 individuals waiting.

This shift is largely driven by the growing number of older adults seeking supportive living environments, and it’s changing how and when families need to plan.
From a care management perspective, the difference is clear:

• Planning ahead allows for choice, timing, and the right fit
• Crisis-driven decisions often limit options to what is immediately available

April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month 💙

For individuals living with Parkinson’s disease, exercise isn’t just helpful — it’s one of the most important tools for maintaining independence, mobility, and quality of life.

Research shows that regular physical activity can:
• Improve balance and reduce fall risk
• Maintain strength and flexibility
• Support walking and coordination
• Help with posture and stiffness
• Boost mood and reduce anxiety/depression
• Slow functional decline over time

The key is finding the right type of exercise. This might include:

This week, I was on the other side.

My mother was in the hospital, and like so many families, we experienced firsthand the challenges that come with today’s healthcare system — short staffing, long waits for an ER beds, time spent in a hallway, and limited room availability. We found ourselves constantly advocating to make sure her needs were addressed.
As a geriatric care manager, I guide families through these situations every day. But experiencing it personally is a powerful reminder of how overwhelming and stressful it can feel when it’s your loved one.
Families often don’t know what questions to ask, who to speak with, or how to ensure their loved one receives the attention they need. Advocacy matters. Being present matters. Having someone who understands the system matters.
