For more than 20 years, Sarah Penegor has been helping patients behind the scenes as a member of the Health Information Management team at UP Health System – Marquette.

Sarah has always been drawn to healthcare and helping others. While she originally planned to become a nurse, she discovered a passion for Health Information Management and found a meaningful way to support patients through the medical records process. Since joining UP Health System – Marquette 21 years ago, she has held several roles within HIM and helped navigate major changes in healthcare, including multiple electronic medical record transitions.

Sarah says one of the things she enjoys most about working at UP Health System – Marquette is the amazing HIM team she works alongside every day.

🚴⚡ As e-bikes and e-scooters continue to grow in popularity, injuries related to crashes have become an increasing concern, particularly among children and teens. Many of these injuries may be preventable by taking a few important safety precautions.

Common risk factors include riding without a helmet, carrying passengers when the bike is not designed for them, riding at excessive speeds and failing to follow traffic rules.

Parents and caregivers can help keep young riders safe by encouraging them to:
🪖 Wear a helmet every time they ride
🚦 Obey traffic signs and signals
👀 Stay alert and avoid distractions, including phones and earbuds
🚲 Ride only the number of passengers the bike is designed to carry
💡 Use lights and reflective gear when visibility is limited
🛣️ Understand that e-bikes share the road and require the same attention and responsibility as other vehicles
🧒 Make sure young riders have the skills and experience needed to safely operate an e-bike
📋 Follow manufacturer recommendations and local regulations regarding rider age and operation

🚗 Everyone plays a role in preventing injuries. Drivers should watch for e-bikes and e-scooters, give riders adequate space and remain attentive, especially at intersections, crosswalks and in neighborhoods where children and teens may be riding.

E-bikes can be a great way for kids and teens to stay active and independent, but they can also reach speeds that increase the risk of serious injury during a crash. Nationally, injuries related to e-bikes and e-scooters continue to rise. According to national injury surveillance data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, children and teens account for a significant portion of reported e-bike and e-scooter injuries.

Before your child heads out on an e-bike this summer, take a few minutes to review the rules of the road, make sure they have a properly fitted helmet and talk about safe riding habits. A simple conversation today could help prevent a serious injury tomorrow.

Cassidy Cantalin (Thomas), PA-C, is a physician assistant at UP Health System – Marquette Respiratory Medicine, where she helps patients navigate complex pulmonary conditions and provides compassionate, patient-centered care.

A proud Upper Peninsula native, Cassidy was inspired to pursue a career in healthcare by her passion for helping others and improving her community's well-being. After earning a degree in nutritional sciences, she continued her education to become a physician assistant and returned home to provide care to the region she loves.

Cassidy values building meaningful relationships with her patients and helping them better understand and manage their health. She is grateful to work alongside a dedicated team committed to delivering high-quality care and making a difference in the lives of those they serve.

A native of Chassell, Michigan, Daniel earned his Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience from the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor and his Master of Physician Assistant Studies from Concordia University Ann Arbor. Prior to joining UP Health System – Marquette, he gained valuable experience caring for cardiovascular patients in both outpatient and inpatient settings.

⚠️ AIR QUALITY ALERT: WHAT DOES "HAZARDOUS" MEAN FOR YOUR HEALTH?

Air quality levels across portions of the Upper Peninsula have reached levels that health experts classify as hazardous. This is the highest category on the Air Quality Index and means the smoke in the air can affect everyone, not just those with underlying health conditions.

When air quality reaches hazardous levels, even healthy individuals may experience:
• Eye, nose and throat irritation
• Coughing or shortness of breath
• Headaches
• Increased fatigue
• Reduced ability to exercise outdoors

For those with asthma, COPD, heart disease or other chronic conditions, symptoms may become more severe.

🏠 During hazardous air quality events:
• Stay indoors as much as possible
• Keep windows and doors closed
• Avoid activities that add pollution indoors, such as burning candles, wood fires or vacuuming
• Use air conditioning on recirculate if available
• If you must be outside, consider wearing a well-fitting N95 mask

The Upper Peninsula is no stranger to changing weather conditions, but hazardous air quality is something we should all take seriously. Taking precautions now can help reduce exposure and protect your health until conditions improve.
