Kiara Brokenbrough, 32, was a beloved wife, creative spirit, and inspiring voice whose life ended tragically on March 30, 2026, while welcoming her son, Jonah.
Kiara and her husband, Joel, gained international recognition in 2022 for their thoughtful, budget-conscious wedding in Los Angeles. By prioritizing their commitment over ceremony costs, they demonstrated that love—not expense—defines a marriage. Kiara's $47 gown, free hillside location, and guest-participation reception inspired countless couples to focus on what truly matters.
Kiara's son, Jonah, survived the delivery and is receiving care in the NICU, where he is reportedly showing remarkable improvement. Joel is navigating life as a new father with the support of family, friends, and community.
Kiara's passing has reignited important conversations about maternal health, particularly the disparities faced by Black mothers in the United States. Her legacy lives on through the wisdom she shared, the love she gave, and the awareness her story continues to inspire.

This makes me so sad.
It’s basically saying we don’t want your doula, your birth plan, don’t care about your autonomy and wishes, this strays from standard of care.

What they do want you to do is follow all of their brutal, barbaric in some cases, forced ways of funnelling women using the same tactics so they can make more money. That includes pumping you full of drugs you don’t need most of the time, scaring women in to not trusting their bodies and making it hard for you to have a voice during your own birth, of your own child.
This is what control looks like even before they enter the world.
Taking your voice back looks like listening to your body, trusting your doula or midwife and care team, no matter where you decide to give birth.
The choice is, and always will be yours when it comes to your body.

✨ A milestone moment for me ✨

Today I had the honor of assisting my first home birth — welcoming a beautiful baby girl, 8 lbs 8 oz, born to a first-time mama who labored in the comfort and safety of her own home.

This birth was a powerful reminder that home birth doesn’t mean “hands-off” — it means supported, informed, and deeply intentional.

So very proud of mom for listening to her body, asking questions, and doing things during labor she was nervous to do. A true superstar birth !
