Despite this, and other myths being spread on Facebook, YOU CANNOT DO CPR ON YOURSELF, here's the truth..
STOP SHARING THE "SELF-CPR" MYTH — It Could Cost Someone Their Life 🚨
You've probably seen posts claiming you can do CPR on yourself, or that coughing repeatedly during a heart attack can save you. It sounds helpful. It goes viral constantly. And it is completely false.
Here's the truth:
❌ You CANNOT perform CPR on yourself. When your heart stops, you lose consciousness within about 20 seconds. There's no way to be both the rescuer and the patient.
❌ "Cough CPR" is a dangerous myth. The American Heart Association does NOT endorse it. It was only ever used in hospital settings with a full medical team present. Trying it at home just wastes the precious minutes you should be spending calling 911.
✅ If you're alone and feel heart attack symptoms — chest pressure, pain in your arm or jaw, shortness of breath, sudden dizziness — here's what to actually do:
1️⃣ Call 911 IMMEDIATELY — don't wait it out
2️⃣ Unlock your front door so paramedics can get in
3️⃣ Sit or lie down — do NOT exert yourself
4️⃣ Chew a regular aspirin (if you're not allergic)
5️⃣ Stay on the line with the dispatcher
💡 The REAL life-saving tip? Make sure the people around you know CPR. For every minute without it during cardiac arrest, survival odds drop by ~10%. Bystander CPR can double or triple the chance of survival.
Take a CPR class. Encourage your family to do the same. That's the move that actually saves lives. 💙
