Did you know terramation was first made legal here in Washington State?

This is a beautiful article from The Stranger about Death Care practitioners local to Western Washington. If you're wondering whether there's a better way for our culture to handle death and grief, this article is worth your time.

"There is an inherent avoidance in mainstream culture when it comes to witnessing death. We keep it at an arm’s length, not spending time with decedents’ bodies. Most of us don’t create rituals and altars. We’re discouraged from taking bereavement time, and we lack the language to openly talk about death and grief. Instead we embalm bodies, put them in impenetrable coffins, separated from nature and public view. We lean on practices that are quiet, restrained, and profoundly misaligned with the realities of death and grief."

I can't wait to see you at the Good Death Seminar Series tomorrow!

The Good Death Seminar Series is a 12-month community education program designed to empower families, caregivers, and communities with essential end-of-life knowledge and compassionate understanding. A recent Medicare study revealed that 98% of hands-on end-of-life care is performed by untrained
family caregivers — even when hospice is involved. This lack of preparation can lead to trauma, confusion, and unnecessary suffering. The Doulagivers Good Death Seminar Series was created to change that — by giving families the skills, knowledge, and confidence to support a loved one through this natural stage of life.

This month we will cover the essential things you need to know to choose your Healthcare Proxy. You'll learn how to choose the right healthcare proxy, clarify the language often misused in medical systems, and ensure your proxy honors your true values and wishes. I hope you'll join us for The Good Death Seminar # 4!

Don't forget that we are welcoming two guest speakers this month, Peter Garcia Jr., owner of Seniors Helping Seniors Everett and Mary Ann Higgins, Senior Companion Program Coordinator with Homage Senior Services.

If you're not yet registered, please reserve your spot to learn more about these vital services available to our community! Link available in the comments, or reach out directly and I'll make sure we reserve your spot.

See you tomorrow!

What is a Healthcare Proxy? How do you pick the right one?

You might be surprised to hear that it's not always your spouse!

Next week at The Good Death Seminar Series we will be having a thoughtful discussion about the key things to look for in a Healthcare Proxy, and what to do if you do not have a family member you can choose to fill this role.

A few spaces remain! I hope to see you there. 💜

If you are living an ordinary day today, this is your reminder to find moments of gratitude for this precious life. And if life has changed significantly for you recently, know that you are not alone and there is help and support available to you if you ever find yourself in need.

💜Also make sure you find corners of the internet that raise your spirits and bring you joy. Tiny Buddha does that for me!

Did you know that there is a loneliness epidemic affecting seniors in our country? And it doesn't just affect the mental health of our aging population, loneliness has a measurable impact on our physical health as well.

"The senior loneliness epidemic is a public health crisis affecting roughly one-third to 43% of older adults. Social isolation significantly increases the risk of premature death, heart disease by 29%, and dementia by 50%. Major risk factors include living alone, chronic illness, low income, and loss of mobility or a spouse." (NIH)

That's why I'm so excited to be able to highlight a few local businesses providing critical services to our communities.

Mary Ann Higgins, the Senior Companion Program Coordinator at Homage Senior Services will be sharing about their Senior Companion Program. "Senior Companions are volunteers age 55+ who serve between 8 to 40 hours per week helping an average of two to four seniors live independently in their own homes."

And Peter Garcia Jr. is the owner of Seniors Helping Seniors Everett, a "non-medical in-home care network that pairs older adults who need assistance with active, mature seniors who want to provide care."

These services provide critical support, companionship and social connection to older adults living in our communities. No one should be facing aging alone, and both Homage and Seniors Helping Seniors have so much to offer! If you are caring for someone who is aging and you would like to improve their living well aging plan, you don't want to miss this event!

This also applies to the parts of your loved ones that are living on within you. 💜

Someone you love deeply may no longer be here in physical form, but they've left a legacy of their love that you carry with you every day.

Who's legacy are you remembering today? What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind?

A beautiful reminder to find daily moments of radical acceptance when you are able. Recognizing and appreciating that the easier days and the harder days are all part of life's rich tapestry allows us to find more gratitude and acceptance for what comes our way.

"All of these experiences—the light and the heavy—are part of the rich landscape of being alive."

If you are having one of the harder days, I'm sending love your way. And if your day feels lighter today, I wish you a moment of gratitude amongst the joy of it all.

Thank you for being here 💜

Life will bring moments of great joy and beauty, just as it brings discomfort, uncertainty, and emotions we didn't ask for. All of these experiences—the light and the heavy—are part of the rich landscape of being alive. True freedom comes not from trying to hold onto the pleasant or escape the difficult, but from cultivating a mindful, steady heart that welcomes every moment with calm clarity. Not untouched by life, but unshaken and deeply at peace within it.

May you and all beings be well, happy and at peace. 🙏
