When you were a child, you didn’t wake up one day and decide that your emotional needs no longer mattered.
You simply learned that they weren’t going to be met.
So you adapted.
Maybe you learned not to cry because no one came to comfort you.
Maybe you stopped asking for help because every request was met with criticism, rejection, or disappointment.
Maybe you learned to carry your pain alone because that felt safer than being vulnerable.
Your nervous system wasn’t trying to ruin your life.
It was trying to protect you.
When emotional pain goes unrecognized for years, your mind naturally searches for something that brings relief, even if only for a moment.
For some people, that relief becomes alcohol.
For others, drugs.
For others, food, gambling, shopping, po*******hy, work, social media, or even relationships they know are hurting them but can’t seem to leave.
The addiction may look different, but underneath it is often the same question:
“What am I trying not to feel?”
That doesn’t mean addiction isn’t destructive.
It is.
But if we only focus on the addiction and never the pain beneath it, we miss the reason it began in the first place.
Healing isn’t just about stopping the behavior.
It’s about understanding the wound that made the behavior necessary.
It’s about learning that your feelings deserve attention instead of escape.
That your pain deserves compassion instead of shame.
And that you no longer have to survive the way you did as a child.
Because survival kept you alive.
Healing is what allows you to finally live.
🤍 If you’re ready to better understand the patterns your childhood left behind, you’re in the right place.
If this resonates with you, I Didn’t Choose to Be Born explores the childhood wounds, emotional neglect, and survival patterns that shape the way you see yourself.
And if those wounds later show up as limerence, anxious attachment, emotional fixation, or chasing unavailable love, Chasing Love That Hurts will help you understand why letting go feels so difficult.
