There are conversations that have been missing from our circles for far too long and menopause is one of them.
Black women are experiencing symptoms earlier, more severely, and are still being undertreated and overlooked. That’s not okay. So we talked about it. Openly. Honestly. In community at the .ofpurposeunited sip and savor event last weekend.
The information you deserve shouldn’t depend on who your doctor is or whether someone in your family felt comfortable enough to warn you.
If this is a conversation you’ve been needing, save this, share it with a woman in your life, and drop a comment below if you’re ready to stop suffering in silence.
We’re just getting started.

I never thought I’d be the doctor who shows up on social media and social media marketing was definitely not part of med school training. It did feel awkward showing up and totally out of my comfort zone but whenever a patient signs up and says ‘I came because you fell relatable and real’, or ‘I knew you were my doctor the moment I saw you’, then I am reminded that purpose is > comfort. And also that I can continue to do hard things. Medicine deserves to have the human put back in it. Now I see that connection starts long before the first appointment.
When you show up as you, the right patients do too. Patients who value relationship over rush. Turns out being real is the best kind of marketing!! So I’ll keep showing up, one awkward reel or post after another. Who else feels awkward showing up on social media? ☝️

These two symptoms should never be dismissed in a postmenopausal woman. Indeed they could be due to benign causes, but it is always worth an evaluation. Uncontrolled vaginal or vulvar itching can be a symptom of gynecological cancer, such as vulvar or vaginal cancer. While most persistent itching in postmenopause is caused by benign things like estrogen related vaginal changes or skin disorders, like lichen sclerosus, any new or worsening non-healing itch requires evaluation by a gynecologist. Other concerning signs to look for include white or red patches, thick or rough skin, sores, lumps, ulcers, or wart like growth that do not heal, unusual vaginal bleeding, or foul-smelling discharge, pelvic pain or tenderness. Post menopausal bleeding is pretty unusual, and even though it could be things like polyps causing it, it is also concerning for endometrial cancer. At the very least, schedule an exam with your primary care, doctor or gynecologist. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

I only ever wanted to take care of people.
But somewhere between prior authorizations, p*er to p*er calls, insurance overreach, rushed visits and endless paperwork, medicine stopped feeling like medicine. The worst part is Insurance formula is changing every now and again and all of a sudden medication that was previously covered is suddenly not covered anymore. Patience had left floundering and confused, not sure what direction the treatment should take. It should be absurd that insurance companies have this much influence or overreach where it comes to patient care. The worst is them sometimes insisting on period p*e calls when they’ve already made up their minds that the procedure or test or medication you are requesting approval for will not be approved. Taking out time from you already busy workday to spend on the phone all for nothing.
So I chose a different path that puts patients first. No more fighting with insurance to do what’s right for my patients.
I wish I could say that I was completely free of prior authorizations, even in the Dpc world, but for my patients who still have insurance I still do my best to go to bat for them. To my colleagues, holding down the fort in the traditional healthcare world, I say you are the real MVPs! What has been your experience with Insurance? Do share in the comments.

I only ever wanted to take care of people. But somewhere between prior authorizations, p*er to p*er calls, insurance overreach, rushed visits and endless paperwork, medicine stopped feeling like medicine. Coming from a completely different country it took me a while to wrap my head around the insurance landscape. Formulary changes every January and all of a sudden medication that was approved is no longer covered. Denying testing and making patients jump through hoops. I have insane stories of patients suffering moral injury to the point of losing their faith because they were kept in pain for so long before MRI or surgery was approved.
So I chose a different path that puts patients, not paperwork first. No more fighting with insurance to do what’s right for my patients. Even though we are not completely immune because some of our patients carry insurance and we still go to bat for them to get meds approved when necessary. That is direct primary care. It is direct with no insurance middleman so your doctor actually works for you and no one else. You get easy access to your physician with discounted labs and imaging and affordable membership fees.
Interested in a different model of care where insurance doesn’t get to pick your doctor? DM me and we can discuss if this is a good fit for you
