The first 40 days after birth are a wild ride! Having a new little human taking up time and space and stealing sleep can be challenging for mind, body and spirit wellness. The foods you eat can help heal.
💟 Focus on warm, soft, nourishing, easily digested foods like soups, stews, broths and teas
💟 Iron helps replenish and fights fatigue. Foods like red meat, liver, lentils and dark leafy greens are great choices.
💟Calcium is key especially if breastfeeding. Adding daily, leafies and almonds can up those stores.
💟Omegas are important for **mood regulation**. Add in salmon, sardines, and chia seeds or get a high quality supplement like Nordic Naturals prenatal DHA.
💟 Choline is amazing for **mood stability**. Find that in eggs and liver as well as some high quality prenatals.

Having easy to eat with one hand snacks ready to go can help make it easier to get in nutrients while caring for baby. Blood sugar stability is also important to postpartum mental health!

Our postpartum doulas do an amazing job nurturing YOU too by meal and snack prepping nourishing foods to help you on your healing journey. 💜

On April 2nd, the love of my life and the one who made me a mama turned 14 years old. On March 31st, I started the yearly timer from when I began labor to holding baby little baby boy. Yep. That’s right. 62hours roughly from when I started contractions until Greyson Liam, my sweet baby Grey, was earthside. Oof.

I reflected this year with a lot of sympathy and grace for the 30 year old girl I was then with a birth plan full of ideas and hope. I took a natural birth class with my mom as my partner, pretending that Grey’s dad was working and not that he just didn’t feel comfortable supporting me as he left our relationship. (Funny, I still have the lotion that was@the same in that bathroom at the birth class bc it meant something to me and my mom).

I knew all of the things to *soften* *open* *release*. And yet I did everything “wrong”. Every single contraction I would sit in my nursing glider, say “oh no here comes another one”, scrunch up my face, and ball up into a tightly wound ball. It hurt. BAD. But of course it did!

I felt too bad to wake my bestie up to push on my back even though when she did it was amaaaaazing! I felt too bad to ask my other bestie to support me bc she was pregnant too and needed rest. I felt too bad and too ashamed to have the love of my life who uprooted his work and life for me to be there when I gave birth. I was too ashamed to let him see me in primal guttural pain. He would have saved me for sure.

I gave grace to that mama who was too scared, too held in her trauma, to shame and guilt filled to receive support and love. I sent that mama love. I held her and reminded her that this THIS is exactly my she does the work that she does. That girl who was suspended in her trauma memory and held in that pain and who heard them saying “she is going to have a C-section because she can’t let us check her.” That girl who was pitied instead of empowered. I held her and reminded her she could do this, that she was safe, that she was worthy. Spoiler alert: 🚨 Greyson Liam was birthed from my body in 6 gentle pushes. A superficial tear at best. He was put onto my chest and my entire world changed for the better best. 4-2-12 💙

Happy World Doula Week to all of my amazingggggg doulas!! 🥰♥️ To be a doula is to serve. However, for MSM doulas, it is so much more. It is to be present and nourishing, affirming and grounding, holding space for a difficult birth story, understanding maternal and whole family mental health matters, knowing resources, knowing trauma may show up, knowing how to truly hold space for it, breathing, grounding, knowing what a 7(ish) cm and 9cm stall might mean and how to navigate it, knowing why your birth matters to PP, understanding BF goals aren’t simply about feeding, knowing baseline number of hours for sleep for mental health, sharing our very vetted resources.

Ahhhhhhhh! My doulas are EVERYTHING! I am training these amazingly beautiful humans so we can help and support so so so many more people who need and desire and deserve this type of layered compassionate support through a trauma informed lens in the fertility, birth and postpartum space.

I’ll share more this week about what these amazing humans bring and what being a doula really means. Stay tuned :)

“What should I pack?” I get asked this so much by clients that I created a list I send them. 😂 In this series, we’ll take a peak at some of my favorite things to suggest. Part 1 is all about creating an environment that tricks your brain into calm, comfort, peace.

1. A RAD MUSIC PLAYLIST! Seriously, this is probably the most important thing. When the room is silent it is easy to get up in your head. This is a birthday party! So let’s act like it! Some people like calmer music, some like fun stuff. This is a good birth partner task if you trust them! 😂

2. TEA AND SNACKS. Yes, tea. If you’re a tea drinker, tea usually signals to the brain to slow down and calm your breath. Pack foods and drinks that pack a nutritional punch, are easy on your belly, and that are comforting to you.

3. HAPPY PICTURES. I string battery lights in the rooms I support in. I always encourage clients to bring pics of their pets, other children, their wedding or a fun vacay. Anything that brings a smile to your face. Also affirmation cards! You can clip the pics and cards to the string lights for when you need a little boost in mood.

4. A COMFY BLANKET OR SWEATER. This is more about the comfort than about the warmth. (You’ll likely be hot during labor) You just want things that feel like home. Plus hospital pillows and blankets suck so you’ll want these in your postpartum room anyway.

I say it all the time— it’s 90% mindset and the rest is position of baby. 😁 Try to bring things that bring you comfort and help you ease into that safe space feeling to birth your baby.

Postpartum is a lot on the mind body spirit. Along with the physical recovery from birthing baby, hormonal shifts, and lack of sleep, you are tasked with keeping a new little human alive! That can feel heavy sometimes. Having support in the postpartum period during the day or overnight can help you feel held and nourished and give you adequate rest. Our doulas are ready to care for the whole family as you ease into growing your family. Making the investment for support is truly an investment in everyone’s physical and mental health. 💚

We advocate fiercely in the birth space so you are seen and heard as an individual, not a number. We support your choices.
