Those who know me are laughing right now, because I am still learning this lesson.
Doing things well, in a timely manner, and staying ahead of the game — that's just how I work. It's how I've always worked. So getting into companionship care has made me stop and really evaluate what matters to the people with whom I work.
Turns out, these loved ones don't care if dinner is on time. They don't care that the laundry is neatly folded.
What they're looking for is someone to sit and listen to their stories. Someone to go on a leisurely walk with, no destination in mind. Someone to talk with about whatever is on their mind — even if it rambles along, even if it circles back three times before it gets anywhere.
I'm learning to let it ramble. To let the walk have no destination. To be on the clock, but not of it.
That's the heart of what Abiding Love is about — not just showing up on time, but learning to slow down once we're there.
