Have you ever watched someone correct a loved one for remembering something differently, or become impatient because they were taking too long to make a decision? I have, and it always makes me cringe.

It's important to remember that our loved ones are doing the very best they can. They are showing up as their best selves, even when memory, processing, or decision-making may not be what it once was.

As companions, our role is to be patient, to listen, to acknowledge, and sometimes to let go of details that may not be entirely accurate. When appropriate, we can gently redirect the conversation or situation without causing embarrassment or frustration.

More than anything, our loved ones deserve to feel seen, understood, valued, and loved—not corrected or belittled.

These are our parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, spouses, and dear friends. They have spent their lives caring for others. They deserve our patience, our compassion, and our very best.

Authentic and dedicated companionship! That is what they wanted!

I went in thinking, "I'm going to get so much done - catch up on email, write an article, maybe even finish that book!”

But ended up sitting and talking about life, stories, family. We enjoyed leisurely meals, played games and I was simply present.

My client took great joy in being a gracious host, making sure I was comfortable and cared for. It gave her purpose.

It’s hard to go in with a mindset of caring for someone and have the tables turned. Yes, I still did all the other routine pieces, but I also had to learn to receive and just be there. Learning to recognize those quieter, deeper needs takes intention. But the reward is completely worth it.

- I didn’t leave having just supported a client.
- I left having built a genuine connection, hopefully even a new friendship.

The heart of this work is something simple, but powerful: making sure people feel seen, heard, and valued.
