May is Mental Health Awareness Month:

Today some history on prominent African Americans in the mental health field:

Mamie Phipps Clark, Ph.D. and Kenneth Bancroft Clark, Ph.D.
Mamie Phipps Clark and Kenneth Bancroft ClarkMamie Phipps Clark was the first African American woman to earn a doctorate degree in psychology from Columbia University. She previously earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Howard University. Her experience in college and specifically graduate-level courses helped her realize the shortage of psychological services available to the African American community and other minorities. The Clarks are best known for the famous “Doll Study” in which more than 200 Black children participated. Both Mamie and Kenneth Clark worked on this study, providing invaluable evidence in favor of ending school segregation in the supreme court case Brown vs. The Board of Education, citing that school segregation was psychologically harmful to black children. Dr. Kenneth Clark was the first-ever black president of the American Psychological Association. Dr. Mamie Phipps Clark’s dedication and passion for adequate mental health services for all prompted Dr. Clark to open her own agency to provide comprehensive psychological services to the poor, Black, and other minority children and families. In February 1946, Dr. Clark and her husband opened the doors of “The Northside Center for Child Development” for those in the Harlem area. She worked at the center, providing counseling and other psychological services from 1946 until 1979, when she retired. Although retired, Dr. Mamie Phipps Clark served on various advisory boards and remained very active in her community.

I had a client yesterday who made my week!
Client: Hey Doc! I don't know. I feel I should be doing something!
I don't know what is going on. I am thinking, have I gotten to where I need to be? There is nothing happening in my life right now.
Me: Thinking: Knowing she has moved a significant distance in her healing. She is reaching for a crisis or something to fix
I said, "What's that?" What should you be doing?
Silence.
Me: Well, it seems to me that it may be a wonderful place to be! Didn't you feel that?
Silence...
Client: Naw. Feel what Doc?
Me: What are you feeling in this moment?
( client is thinking.)
Silence... (the client continues to think) no movement. hardly breathing. Looks like she is anticipating something to happen in the moment. It's quiet. She widens her eyes.
Client: Doc. I don't feel anything. My mind is not racing. My heart is beating, and I am breathing. (a little shallow breathing as if she is waiting for something to take place)
Me: Yep. Your system is not used to you not having a crisis, either you or someone you care about.
,
Client: All mane! Doc! I feel good! It's scary; I don't know how to handle not always having to look for a way out. There is nothing going on in my life. Thank God!! This is what it feels like to have peace.
Me: Yes, Yes! This is it. No crises. No one is grabbing at you for pieces of you, and nobody is out to harm you! And you are not running for your life.
She smiled. She dangled her legs like a little girl sitting in that chair.
Me: When was the last time you had a seizure?

Client: It has been 3 months. But before that, I was without one for almost 6 months.

Both of us started shouting around that office!
This baby is an adult now. But she experienced some horrific boogeyman, nightmare on Elm Street-type stuff.
Her first 16 years of life were filled with abuse after abuse after abuse.

All types, physical, sexual, emotional, and psychological. Her score on the ACEs questionnaire was a 10 with in-depth descriptions.
Significant PTSD with active traumatic symptoms.

Her neurologist (as so many of my clients have been referred to my office by their neurologist) referred her to my office for trauma therapy, i.e., CPT, TF-CBT, and EMDR, integrated with other interventions.

She'd experienced a stroke at 19 and was diagnosed with epileptic seizures at the age of 24.

Medicines worked okay. But Trauma therapy has changed how her brain and body communicate with each other. She has been with me for 3 years. The grueling work was done in the first year. Getting her comfortable with the process. Her life depended on the work. And she knew it.

My Clients be Gassing my Head UP❣️❤️‍🩹😜🤣

But they keep me believing!

Without the brain, there is no body function. Why not care for your brain as you do your body? Brain function affects how your body functions.

Stress on your mental state can lead to the excretion of harmful chemicals into your body.

Some of those chronic pains have nothing to do with what is wrong with your body.

Take your mental health seriously. Having mental health challenges is a real thing. It does not mean you are broken. It does not mean you are not strong enough.

Quite the contrary... it means you are human. Your heart is beating, and your brain is working. Your thinking and processing will be affected by anything that is not in harmony with your overall wellness.

Let's stop judging others and look in the mirror. Then go get what YOU need. For too long, we have made mental health issues an anomaly instead of the norm. If you live on this earth, it is possible you have been harmed physically and mentally by the acts of others, as well as your choices.

Stop suffering in silence. You "Strong Black" Woman!!

Tsk... it does not have to be this hard.
