Sometimes the grief is so heavy there are no words to express it so the lonely hits. I have a great village including family who feel the loss just as deeply. But each journey is so unique and sometimes it feels like you’re the only one who can understand yourself. And that’s ok. There is an ebb and flow and it won’t always feel as heavy as it might right now. You may feel this way again but allow yourself to feel it instead of running from it. It will always catch up to you.

I feel this one deeply today. But off to work I go. PS- it’s ok not to be ok.

I’ve finally reached the end of Sad September. Today is the last event. Today is my Mom’s birthday. It’s the third without her here since she passed away just before her 79th. I miss her so much I could scream but them people would look at me funny. But sometimes I’m screaming on the inside. Why Mom? Why didn’t you call me for help sooner? Why God? Why did you take her so quickly? Why Universe? Why can these questions never have answers? Why??

People ask me about her and the first thing I always say is she was Magic. She saw the very best in people. She made ordinary days memorable. She loved fiercely. The only thing she cared about was other people, especially her family but her friends would tell you they were also fiercely loved.

She liked to play dumb but man was she smart! And witty. My dad always told her she should be a writer and she was. She just published her thoughts in letters and Hallmark cards instead of books. I try to be bold and brave in my writing for her. I wish she had known how valuable she was to this world. We are all broken in our own ways and for her that meant never quite believing the wonderful things people said about her. She always questioned her place in the world.

If she could just see how broken we all still are. If she could see what a hole she has left. If she only knew how much we talk about her day after day after day.

Magic. Mom. Synonymous.

Today I will wear her Grover shirt to work. Tonight I will have a patty melt from Five Guys in her honor. Tomorrow I will still miss her just as much as I do today.

I love Josh Johnson. I had no idea he had lost his dad and know that kind of grief. Losing a parent is something you know is the natural order of things but nothing can prepare you for the pain. Both of mine are gone now and it just makes your world different.

It’s Grief Awareness Day and I would be remiss if I didn’t post. I think it’s kind of an odd day or at least worded strangely… are there people who aren’t aware that Grief exists?

Anyway I thought I’d go over the Rules of Grief with you.

1. There are No Rules.

Grief is a very unique individual experience that will vary due to your relationship with the person you are grieving. Not even two family members experience the journey exactly the same.

My goal is just to make you AWARE that you don’t have to go through your journey alone. And know that whatever you feel whenever you feel it, it’s ok. Please reach out if you ever need someone to listen. I’d be honored to walk with you and hear your story. ♥️

This showed up in my memories today so it seemed like a good day to share here again.

So I’m in the midst of cleaning out my mom’s house for an estate sale and let me tell you- it’s simply overwhelming. There are days I am productive and days where I get absolutely nothing done. I unlock the door, walk straight to her chair and just sit. I have to finish this task- it’s taking too long. But there are days when I just can’t decide what to do with the pile of office supplies. There’s a reason estate sale companies exist. Families are not equipped to do the job on their own. I’ve learned that when there’s a loss in the family you should take what you want to keep them just call for help. Tonight I’m meeting with someone who can hopefully help me. Wish me luck! I need to move past this chapter and get back to helping others. I think I’ve needed this time to say goodbye. I’m gonna be a mess again when all the stuff is gone but we can’t keep it all. What I really want is her and I have to remember she’s with me always.

Grief is a sneaky beast. I’m at the car repair place for an alignment and someone just called their dad to help with the cost of their repair. Now I’m trying to hold back tears and not be the crazy lady in the waiting room. I was that girl many many times… not knowing how to pay for a repair and summoning up the nerve to ask my dad. He always said a couple of choice swear words (Marine that he was) but then he always said yes.

My dad has been gone four years and I’ve paid for my own car repairs just fine because at 54 I’ve learned how to manage money but that’s not really the point.

We never stop missing them. Never. We don’t get over a loss, only through. It can be a random Friday at 10am in an Express Oil Change waiting room when you feel just fine then wham! We carry them with us always. And that’s actually a relief. I’m glad we don’t forget what it was like to know them, to hear their voice (even the swear words), to feel loved by them. Love lives on.

Love, Bets
