He came to Chattanooga to learn. Now, he’s back to teach.

After completing his surgery residency with the College of Medicine – Chattanooga in 2025 and fellowship training in Louisville, KY, Texas native Chace Hicks, MD, has returned as an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery.

For Dr. Hicks, coming back means more than returning to a familiar place. It means becoming the mentor he once relied on.

Tennessee needs more child psychiatrists. One innovative program is helping answer that call.

The UT Health Sciences Post-Pediatric Portal Program is one of only five such programs in the country, giving pediatricians specialized training in both adult and child psychiatry. Program director Dr. Allison Ford, program fellow Dr. Ryan Murphy and Dr. Alicia Barnes, chief of Pediatric Psychiatry at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, are helping build a new path to care for children and families across Tennessee.

With 82% of Tennessee counties without a child and adolescent psychiatrist, the need is clear.

By the end of its first five years, the new $350 million College of Medicine Interdisciplinary Building at UT Health Sciences in Memphis is expected to help produce more than 1,450 additional health care professionals for communities across Tennessee, from Memphis to the state's rural corners.

The 300,000-square-foot building will let the UTHSC College of Medicine grow its class size from 175 to 250 students and expand the Physician Assistant Program from 30 to 60 students a year.

Sometimes, the best way to learn about medicine is to hear someone talk candidly about what it’s really like to practice it.

“Scrubbed In: Narratives from the Front Lines” brings those real conversations into the classroom for M1 students. Listening in gives them a chance to hear about their peers’ experiences and think about the kind of physicians they aim to become.

Behind every future physician is a person trying their best to stay grounded. 🧡

M2s, Pepper Mason and Emily Lu, found art to be a stress-relieving outlet, so they decided to launch the university’s Art Club to give students across campus the same opportunity to take a breath, create, and just be.
