Depression in older adults is not “just aging.” It deserves to be recognized, understood, and taken seriously, especially during Depression Education and Awareness Month.
Depression may not always look like sadness. It can appear as withdrawing from others, losing interest in favorite activities, changes in sleep or appetite, irritability, difficulty concentrating, or unexplained aches. These changes may follow a loss, move, hospitalization, or giving up activities such as driving.
Depression is not weakness or a character flaw, and it can be treated at any age. Families can help by staying connected, not simply checking in, and by sharing concerns with a healthcare professional.
At Home Helpers of Germantown, we believe caring for the whole family and their caregivers means offering Home Care with a Heart: presence, patience, dignity, and meaningful connection. 💚
