As July, Disability Pride Month, comes to an end, I want want to share why I am a proud wheelchair user! My wheelchair allows me to get where I want to go just as my legs use to do before becoming paralyzed and now living with a different ability as wheelchair user. It’s a love-love ❤️relationship not a love-hate. My wheelchair doesn’t define me…but people see me differently. I am the same person sitting in it. My wish is that others see me (and others with different abilities) as who we are, not the disability we have. It can be any of you reading this at any time to join my disabled community. It is a beautiful community of amazing people.

Celebrating America 250 yrs., Colorado 150 yrs., Colorado Day & The Lockwood Foundation 7 yrs. Anniversary this weekend summiting Mt. Blue Sky 14,271 ft. Volunteer to hike with a person that cannot walk the trails. It takes a team!!

I joined the disabled community in 2016 after an 80ft. fall down Clear Creek Canton doing what I loved to do….hiking!!! Yes, just one slip and now I’m in the largest MINORITY community!!! However, if I had never fallen and became a wheelchair user, I would be missing out on the most amazing, beautiful community of people in my life!!! So grateful to have survived and I am adapting to my disability everyday.

mission is to advocate for all people living with a disability to be a meaningful part of an integrated community of their choice. Thanks to Wade Blank, founder of Atlantis, so many changes have happened in the Denver Metro to allow people with different abilities more independence ie: curb cuts, independent living skills and training, mentoring, etc. Their philosophy believes people living with disabilities should have the same control over their lives as their abled peers!

It was illegal for visibly disabled people to be seen in public until 1974. The laws called disabled people "unsightly and a disgusting object" and could lead to a fine, arrest or sentence to a work house.
These laws were in initially enacted in San Francisco in 1867 and called "The Ugly Laws" with other cities like Chicago, Portland, New Orleans, and Columbus to keep cities "clean and free of visual disturbances." We were to be kept out of sight. I'm floored learning this and that it lasted so long with the last city (Chicago) finally repealing in 1974.

This group of 19 made changes in Denver.
