SoFla Heat: 1. Dr. Ty: 0.
I intended to run/walk 17 miles today. I mostly walked 10.
And it was one of those workouts where pretty early on, I knew my body was just not cooperating. I was tired before I started, the South Florida heat (at 94 degrees at almost 6pm) was doing what South Florida heat does, my heart rate was higher than I wanted it to be, and the running intervals that normally feel manageable felt like WORK.
I kept adjusting. Slowed down. Walked more. Hydrated. Tried again.
Eventually, I decided that getting to 17 just to say I got to 17 wasn't worth ignoring what my body was telling me.
Am I disappointed? Absolutely. (My watch kept stopping too)
But after looking back at the day, there were some wins hidden inside a bad run.
I still covered 10 miles and spent about three hours on my feet. I learned a LOT about how much I sweat in this heat and how much fluid I actually need. And I learned that fueling for a long run isn't just about what I ate two days ago. I probably didn't give my body enough of what it needed today to do what I was asking it to do. I also walked faster than I usually do.
Most importantly, I was reminded that one bad training day doesn't erase all the good ones that came before it.
Sometimes training is about getting faster or going farther. Sometimes it's about learning when to adjust the plan, taking the lesson, recovering, and coming back for the next one.
The 17 miles will still be there. Today, 10 was enough.
The lesson (and why I am sharing): don't let one bad run that feels like your first day running ever slow you down. Walking is still an accomplishment.
