A lot of parents hear the word reinforcement and immediately think, “Isn’t that just bribery?” Not quite. The difference is when and why it’s used.
Bribery is usually offered in the middle of a difficult moment to try to stop a behavior. Reinforcement is given after a desired behavior to help build that skill again in the future.
That distinction matters because the goal of reinforcement isn’t just compliance. It’s learning. When used thoughtfully, reinforcement can help children develop communication, flexibility, independence, and other meaningful skills.
