You weren't difficult. You were a kid whose brain nobody had the manual for yet.
1. Meltdowns other kids didn't have got you labeled dramatic before you turned ten.
2. Teachers' notes home always mentioned your behavior, never what might be causing it.
3. You were compared to "easier" siblings or classmates more times than you can count.
4. You learned to expect trouble before you'd even done anything wrong.
5. As an adult, "you're so difficult" still lands like a verdict on your whole character.
A child who feels everything at full volume, with no name for what's happening, usually just gets called difficult. The behavior was communication. Nobody was listening yet.
You weren't the problem. You were a signal nobody had learned to read.
There are simple, science backed tools thousands of ADHDers use to manage RSD and finally reach EMOTIONAL FREEDOM.

Three immaculate days, then the fourth undoes all of it.

On Sunday you did everything. Skirting boards. The cupboard under the sink. You filled four bin liners and thought, this is it, this is who I am now.

Monday you kept it going. Tuesday, mostly.

By Wednesday there is a chair with clothes on it. There is a pile on the counter containing a birthday card, a battery, a receipt you might need, and a letter from the dentist.

By Friday you are stepping over things, and the worst part is not the mess at all. It is the voice that says: you had it, and you let it go, again.

Consistency is the single thing ADHD makes hardest. Routines are held in place by executive function and by habit loops that form far more slowly in a brain with unreliable dopamine signalling. Novelty powered that brilliant Sunday. When the novelty ran out, the system that was meant to take over from it was never fully installed.

So you did not let anything go. You ran on the only fuel available to you until it was gone.

Reset instead of restart. There is no streak to break, and the pile on the counter is not a verdict on who you are.

What's on your chair?

Being called lazy hurts less than being watched failing.

You did not start the presentation until the night before. You tell yourself you work better under pressure, and there is some truth in that, but it is not the whole truth.

The whole truth is that if you start early and it comes out mediocre, then that is you. If you start at midnight and it comes out mediocre, then that is just the timing.

So you protect yourself with a deadline. You accept the "disorganised" label because it is softer than the other one.

You have abandoned things you were good at because you were not immediately brilliant at them. You have deleted drafts nobody read. You have not booked the class, because the first lesson means being visibly bad at something in a room full of witnesses.

This is not vanity. When you have spent years being praised for being quick, average starts to feel like exposure. Add rejection sensitivity and an all-or-nothing brain, and perfectionism becomes a protective strategy avoid the task, avoid the evidence, avoid the old familiar shame.

You are not choosing high standards. You are avoiding a very specific pain.

Doing it badly is still doing it. That is not a consolation prize. That is the only route anyone has ever taken.

Nothing about the task changed. Something inside you did.

The tax return sat there for five weeks. You looked at it daily. You felt slightly sick daily. Nothing happened.

Then on a Tuesday, for no reason anybody could identify, you sat down at nine at night and did all of it in ninety minutes. Plus last year's. Plus a spreadsheet nobody asked for.

Same task. Same difficulty. Same you.

And the next morning someone said "see, you can do it when you want to", and you had no answer, because from the outside it genuinely does look like a choice.

It was never a choice. ADHD brains are not reliably driven by importance or consequence the way most systems assume they should be. They are driven by interest, novelty, challenge and urgency and when one of those switches on, the dopamine required to start finally arrives. When none of them do, willpower alone cannot manufacture it.

That is why you can write six thousand words about something you love and not send a two-line email that matters more.

You do not have a discipline problem. You have an activation system that runs on different fuel to everyone else's, and nobody ever handed you the manual for it.
