Too often, people with disabilities are evaluated by whether they can fit into a role exactly as it already exists.

But meaningful inclusion requires more than access to a job posting. It means being willing to rethink tasks, recognize individual strengths, and create different pathways to contribution and growth.

There is no single definition of what valuable work looks like—and there should not be only one path to opportunity.

Workplace accommodations are often misunderstood.

A workplace accommodation is not about lowering expectations. It is about removing barriers so a qualified person with a disability can access, apply for, or perform a job.

The best accommodation often starts with a conversation. Every person and every job is different, so the solution should be based on the individual, the role, and what support is actually needed.

Inclusion begins when we are willing to listen, understand, and make practical changes that help people succeed.

Workplace accommodations are often simpler than people think.

One common myth is that accommodations are always expensive or difficult to provide. The data says otherwise.

According to the Job Accommodation Network, many workplace accommodations cost employers nothing to implement. When there is a one-time cost, the median is $300.

Inclusion does not always require a big budget. Often, it begins with practical changes, good communication, and a willingness to remove barriers so people can access opportunities and perform their jobs effectively.

Common accommodations can be simple.

A workplace accommodation does not always have to be complicated or expensive. Sometimes it can be a flexible schedule, written instructions, assistive technology, a quiet workspace, remote work options, accessible materials, or extra training time.

The best accommodation depends on the person, the job, and the barrier being addressed.

What is a workplace accommodation?

A workplace accommodation is a change that helps a person with a disability apply for a job, do the job, or take part more fully at work.

Accommodations are not about lowering standards. They are about removing barriers so people have a fair opportunity to participate, perform essential job duties, and be included in the workplace.

Disability is not one category.

Disabilities can affect people in many different ways — including how someone moves, learns, communicates, sees, hears, processes information, manages health, or experiences the world.

Different disabilities can mean different needs, different supports, and different barriers to access. But every person deserves the same opportunity to participate, contribute, and be included.

Different disabilities. Different needs. Same right to access and opportunity.

Disability is part of everyday life.

More than 1 in 4 U.S. adults have some type of disability. That means inclusion should not be treated like something extra or only discussed once in a while.

It belongs in our workplaces, schools, communities, programs, and everyday conversations.

Inclusion should not be the exception. It should be part of how we build spaces where everyone has the opportunity to participate and be seen. 🤍
