Beyond The Job Helping first responders lower stress, improve sleep, and live past 57

10/06/2026

Nobody at the station kitchen table wants to admit they feel completely run down.

Most of us try fixing our exhausted bodies in complete secrecy because we think asking for help looks like weakness.

The problem is that generic civilian diets and routines were never built for 24 hour shifts and broken sleep.

When those fail, it is not a character flaw, it is just biology that needs the right blueprint.

Comment CLUB below to join firefighters who are rebuilding their energy and getting their sleep back.

Most firefighters are training for the mirror, in this video I break down the five most important exercises you need to be an elite firefighter.

We hear the word resilience in the fire service a lot, but most of us don't really understand what that means. In this video, I explain what true resilience is and how to achieve it.

What if I told you that there were more important things to a firefighters health than their fitness?

Most of us think that in order to do this job we have to be extremely fit, and Weil I agree that fitness is part of this job, there are more important metrics to our long-term health.

Our fitness is mainly required on fires which only make up 10 to 15% of our calls, but every shift were faced with sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation, disrupts your circadian rhythm and regulates your nervous system.

Treating your nervous system in your circadian rhythm the same way you treat your fitness is much more important than squatting 400 pounds or doing for Fran in three minutes.

Why your nervous system matters more than your bench press

Most firefighters train like athletes.

Heavy lifts. High intensity. Max effort. The mindset that got you through the academy, through the job, through everything.

That mindset will end your career early if it is your only tool.

Here is why.

Strength training builds the engine. Nervous system training determines how long the engine runs.

Your risk of heart disease as a firefighter is not primarily driven by poor fitness. It is driven by chronic sympathetic nervous system activation, the same threat response that makes you effective on scene running 24 hours a day with no off switch. Cortisol stays elevated. Inflammation builds. The cardiovascular system takes the hit not from lack of exercise but from lack of recovery.

The firefighters who make it 25 years without health issues are not necessarily the strongest. They are the ones whose nervous systems learned to shift out of threat mode between calls. Lower resting heart rate. Higher HRV. Faster recovery between shifts.

That shift does not happen in the weight room. It happens in the five minutes after your workout, when you deliberately slow your breathing. It happens in the morning sunlight, which resets your cortisol curve. It happens in the recovery session you do instead of watching TV before bed.

Strength training is important. It is not the variable that determines whether you retire healthy or become a statistic.

Your nervous system is.

Stay calibrated,

John

Most firefighters know exactly how fit they are.

They know their bench press.

Their mile time.

Their body fat percentage.

But very few know how resilient they are.

And that’s a problem.

Because fitness prepares you for the small percentage of calls that require exceptional physical performance.

Resilience prepares you for the large percentage of the job that slowly breaks firefighters down.

The interrupted sleep.

The 2 a.m. medical calls.

The chronic stress.

The trauma exposure.

The years of accumulated wear and tear.

Fitness matters.

But fitness alone can’t protect you from those things.

That’s why some firefighters can be lean, strong, and physically impressive while simultaneously struggling with poor sleep, anxiety, burnout, high blood pressure, heart disease, or declining mental health.

Fitness is a component of resilience.

It is not the whole thing.

The goal isn’t just to build a stronger body.

The goal is to build a more resilient firefighter.

Because fitness helps you survive the call.

Resilience helps you survive the career.

Happy Father's Day to the dads who put everyone else first.

The ones who quietly sacrifice, show up when they're running on empty, and give everything they have to the people they love.

You may not hear it enough, but what you do matters. Who you are matters.

Enjoy your day. You've earned it.

One of the biggest lies firefighters tell themselves is:

“I only have 10 more years until retirement.”

That might be true.

But the lie is believing that retirement is the goal.

Retirement is inevitable.

One day you’ll stop doing this job.

The question is: what will retirement look like when you get there?

Most firefighters spend their careers focused on the pension, the DROP, and the finish line while neglecting the one thing that determines the quality of their retirement:

Their health.

Because retirement doesn’t magically erase decades of sleep deprivation, chronic stress, toxic exposure, poor habits, or disease.

You retire with the same body, the same habits, and the same health you’ve spent years creating.

The firefighters who thrive in retirement aren’t focused on retirement.

They’re focused on their health today.

Retirement isn’t the goal.

Health is the goal.

Because when you prioritize your health today, you’re far more likely to enjoy your retirement tomorrow.

Comment ASSESSMENT and I’ll send you my Firefighter Health Assessment so you can see where you’re at today and what steps you can take to improve your chances of retiring healthy.

Most firefighters spend their careers focused on retirement.

Counting down the years.

Working more overtime.

Building a bigger pension.

Telling themselves they’ll focus on their health later.

But retirement isn’t a magic date where decades of sleep deprivation, chronic stress, toxic exposure, and injuries suddenly disappear.

You retire with the same body, the same habits, and the same health you’ve spent your career building.

That’s why so many firefighters arrive at retirement exhausted, broken down, or never get the opportunity to enjoy it at all.

The firefighters who thrive in retirement aren’t the ones who spend their careers focused on retirement.

They’re the ones who spend their careers focused on their health.

Stop asking:

“How many years do I have left?”

Start asking:

“What can I do today to improve the person who shows up at retirement?”

Comment ASSESSMENT and I’ll send you my Firefighter Health Assessment to see where you’re at today and what steps you can take to improve your chances of making it to retirement healthy.
