We all need a little magic in our lives 🪄🔮🐇🎩✨
This past weekend, we celebrated Stuart’s birthday at The Hand & The Eye in Chicago, an evening filled with wonder, laughter, and more than a few moments that seemed impossible.
For a few hours, we became children again: curious, delighted, and completely open to surprise. And there was even a children’s book (Congrats Jenny and Cayley on publishing it!) to take home, as if to remind us that growing older doesn’t mean outgrowing wonder.
As I watched the magic unfold, I found myself thinking about trust. (The topic of my next book)
Every great magician first creates a relationship with the audience. We give them our attention. We agree to be present. And, for a few moments, we feel safe enough to let go of certainty and experience wonder.
Trust does not mean believing blindly. It means feeling safe enough to remain open—to another person, a new possibility, or an idea that might challenge what we thought we knew.
Magic creates wonder by hiding the mechanism. Trust creates confidence by revealing it.
In a world that can feel increasingly cynical and divided, perhaps we need more of both: the trust to stay open and the magic to remind us that not everything meaningful has to be predictable.
Here’s to celebrating the people we love, becoming children again every now and then, and always leaving a little room for wonder. Happy Birthday, Stuart, and thank you to everyone who helped us celebrate!
