TMJ self release part 2! This release requires clean hands and a bit of patience but it's worth it.

Step 1: Take a clean pointer finger and stick it inside your mouth on the outer side of your teeth. Follow your teeth all the way back to your molars.

Step 2: Once there you should meet resistance, possibly something that feels almost like bone. Open your mouth slightly to allow your finger to move further back and up. When you press and it feels a bit tender then you know you're definitely in the right spot.

Step 3: Start off by applying some pressure with the pad of your finger to that area. Hold for 10 seconds and then slowly start to work deeper. Try this for up to 60 seconds or until you start to feel it release.

If you've ever had pain or tightness in your jaw area then you may have become familiar with the term TMJ disorder. In this post, I'll describe one quick way you can self massage/release the jaw to provide some relief. A quick run down first for those who don't know about TMJ.

The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) in the jaw allow us to talk, yawn, and chew food while the muscles in the jaw control TMJ positions and movement. TMJ disorder can be caused by overuse or trauma and can often present as:

-Pain in the face, jaw, or head (including headache)
-Gets stuck or "locked" with mouth open or closed
-Pops or clicks when moving

A simple way to help combat those symptoms is by pressing your fingertips into your temples and holding pressure for about 30 seconds.

Check back soon to learn how to do a deeper self release of the jaw!

Seasonal Affective Disorder is estimated to affect 10 million Americans. Some of the symptoms, which generally start to appear in the fall or winter, include:

- Hypersomnia or a tendency to oversleep

- A change in appetite, trending towards sweet or starchy foods

- A drop in energy levels

- Difficulty concentrating

- Feelings of hopelessness and sadness

Massage Therapy is a great way to combat SAD as studies have shown that massage has beneficial effects on anxiety, depression, circadian rhythm, immune system, and serotonin levels - which serotonin works to regulate mood, appetite, and sleep (among a few others).

3 stretches to relieve Sciatica!

1: Stretch your legs out in front of you and reach for your toes while tucking your chin to your chest. This should stretch your lower back (maybe even your upper back if you are as tight as me!) and glutes.

2: Sit up tall on the floor and bend one leg so the sole of your foot is flat against your opposite thigh (as if you were half sitting in a cross-legged position).

Bend your other leg at the knee and place the foot on the floor on the outside of the opposite knee then hug that knee into your chest (you should feel this stretch in your hip and glutes)

This stretch can also be done with your leg stretched out in front of you rather than in a half cross-legged position.

3: Sit up tall in a chair and bring your ankle to rest on your opposite knee.

Lean forward with a straight back until you feel the stretch in your hip and glutes.
