As a therapist and clinical supervisor, one of the most common things I hear is:

“I feel like I don't know where to go in session.” or you catch yourself "suggesting what to do with little or no client exploration"

And honestly… I’ve been there too!

A lot of us were trained to ask questions, give insight, and help move things forward. But over time that can turn into over-explaining, over-directing, and leaving sessions feeling like we carried most of it.

That’s what led me to go deeper into Motivational Interviewing not just understanding it, but actually using it in real conversations.

I put together a short, practical MI skills guide focused on:

how to respond when clients feel stuck or unsure
how to recognize and work with change talk vs sustain talk
how to guide sessions without taking over
what to actually say in those moments where you’re not sure how to respond

It’s not theory-heavy. It’s meant to be something you can use right away in session.

If you’re a therapist or coach and have felt that tension of “I’m doing too much,” this might support you in shifting that.
