Seeing someone have a seizure can be frightening, especially if you’ve never witnessed one before.

Knowing what to do (and what not to do) can help you protect the person from injury while the seizure runs its course.

A seizure can look different from person to person. Someone may fall, become stiff, have repeated jerking movements, stare blankly, seem confused, or temporarily lose awareness of what’s happening around them.

If someone is having a seizure:

🛡️ Keep the area safe.
Stay with them, move nearby objects out of the way, and give them space.

🧥 Protect their head.
If possible, place something soft and flat, like a folded jacket, underneath their head.

🚫 Don’t hold them down.
Trying to stop their movements can cause injury.

🚫 Never put anything in their mouth.
A person having a seizure cannot swallow their tongue. Putting an object or your fingers in their mouth can cause injury.

⏱️ Time the seizure.
Knowing how long it lasts can be important information for emergency responders.

After the seizure, the person may be tired, confused, or disoriented. Stay with them as they recover and offer calm reassurance.

When should you call 911?
*The seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes
*Another seizure begins soon afterward
*The person has trouble breathing, doesn’t regain responsiveness, or is injured
*The seizure happened in water
*You believe it’s their first seizure
*You’re unsure or concerned about their condition

💡Stay-Ready Tip:
You don’t have to remember everything perfectly. Start with four things:

Protect. Don’t restrain. Nothing in their mouth. Time it.

The more familiar these steps become, the easier they can be to recall when something unexpected happens.

🤔Question for you: before reading this, did you know you should never put anything in someone’s mouth during a seizure?

Your employee has a severe allergic reaction at work. Would your team know what to do?

Safety procedures are important, but it is just as important for employees to know how to respond when an emergency happens.

If someone at your workplace suddenly has trouble breathing, develops swelling in the face or throat, becomes dizzy or unresponsive, or shows other signs of a severe allergic reaction, your team may have only moments to recognize the emergency and take action.

That is why workplace readiness involves more than checking CPR certification off a list.

Everyone at your workplace should know:

✅ How to recognize when someone may need emergency help
✅ How and when to activate EMS
✅ Where workplace first aid supplies are located
✅ What emergency procedures are in place
✅ How to respond within the limits of their training until help arrives

That is the purpose of our Stay Ready Method™

LEARN → Keep important safety knowledge fresh.
PLAN → Put practical emergency readiness procedures in place.
TRAIN → Give your team hands-on CPR, AED & First Aid training.
MAINTAIN → Keep certifications, resources, and readiness from being forgotten after class.

Your responsibility for workplace readiness does not begin and end on certification day.

📍 A&E CPR helps businesses throughout the Milwaukee area build more prepared workplaces through the Stay Ready Method™.

🩹 First Aid Quick Tip: Severe Allergies

If someone you regularly spend time with has a known severe allergy, know where their prescribed emergency epinephrine is kept BEFORE an emergency happens.

During a severe allergic reaction, every second matters! An emergency isn't the time to start searching for medication or figuring out the plan.

📍 Know where it is.
📋 Know the person's emergency plan.
📞 If you suspect anaphylaxis, call 911.
