Substance abuse and medication misuse in older adults are critical health topics that affect both healthcare providers and family caregivers 🏡🧠

To support better care and awareness, we are highlighting a dedicated collection of practical resources—developed by the Canadian Coalition for Seniors' Mental Health (CCSMH)—covering alcohol, prescription medications (such as benzodiazepines and opioids), and cannabis use in older adults.

These downloadable guides, webinars, and toolkits provide actionable advice for clinicians, older individuals, and their loved ones.

How can psychiatry and psychogeriatrics shape the future economy? 🧠💡

Through strategic collaboration with the Global Brain Economy Initiative (GBEI), IPA leaders and partners—including Helen Lavretsky, Olu Ajilore, Dilip Jeste, Cheryl Healy, and Harris Eyre—are defining the essential role of mental health in building "Brain Capital."

A new publication in Psychiatric Times details how clinicians can lead this movement by demonstrating the economic impact of mental health, advocating for brain health, and connecting clinical care with brain skills for the future.

As technology evolves, protecting older adults from digital risks and supporting their mental health becomes increasingly vital. 🌍💡

Dr. Ipsit Vahia (McLean Hospital / Harvard Medical School) shares an important update on the recently introduced Senior Chatbot Protection Act and AI in Aging Act. These bipartisan efforts seek to better understand how AI affects older individuals and establish safety guidelines around AI chatbots, with dedicated provisions for late-life mental health.

Because older adults utilize digital tools in distinct ways, targeted legislation is a major step forward in protecting their rights and well-being.

Advancing non-pharmacological interventions for global healthy aging. 🧠💬

At the 2026 IPA Congress in Leiden, Ching Yi Kuo presented research co-authored with Boyd Davis, Maria I. Lapid, and Shu-Chuan Chen on the positive effects of sandtray therapy on mental health, life review, and cognitive function in older adults in Taiwan.

The IPA Congress serves as a global gathering space for cross-cultural research and person-centered care. 🔗 https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1041610226000505
