“If you want your kids to eat what you eat, you need to feed them what you eat!” We have heard this time and again, but when we put it into practice it results in frustration and wasted food.
Here’s my tip: if the food is combined into a bowl like my orange chicken above, try putting sauces on the side and plate separately. When kids can’t see all the elements in a dish, they may feel distrustful of it like you’re trying to sneak in something they don’t like.

Here is what I did: served the same chicken and rice from what we were eating (not the usual dino nuggets they love), added ketchup because they love anything they can dip in ketchup, and gave cucumbers rather than the cooked veggies we ate because they love cucumbers. This created interest in the plate.

Is your child coming home with an untouched lunch? 5 possible reasons and what to do about it ⬇️

🍎Time. School lunch is notorious for being too short. Often kids complain they wanted to eat more, but ran out of time. Solution: optimize your child’s lunch by opening things that can be pre-opened, cutting fruit, cutting sandwiches into more bite- sized pieces, pre-mixing and assembling things that can be.

🍎Milk. Most school lunches offer milk. Many kids aren’t used to getting milk at meals and they fill up on the calories provided. Solution: this might not be a bad thing just keep in mind they might be getting more calories than just what you’re providing. If you would rather have your child eat their lunch vs drinking their milk discuss at home about drinking their milk after they have consumed at least some of their lunch.

🍎You’re introducing new foods at lunch. We are all for introducing new foods, but at school lunch when your child is out of their comfort zone might not be the place. Solution: if you want to introduce a new food item in your child’s school lunch offer it at home first to familiarize them.

🍎Foods aren’t traveling well. Hot foods aren’t staying hot, cold foods aren’t staying cold, foods getting mushy. Solution: talk to your child about how food is tasting. Switching up their lunch box, separating foods, or opting to not serve certain foods at lunch might be the solution.

🍎Peer pressure/feedback. Does your kid love a food at home, but then refuses to eat it come lunch at school? This could be because a fellow classmate commented on a food “I don’t like that”, “that looks gross”, “that smells funny”. Solution: Make sure to have the “lunch debrief” when your child gets home. Discuss what foods were a hit and what were a miss and use this feedback to pivot for the next lunch. Also encourage your children to not comment on others’ lunches in a negative way. “Everyone’s family is different and everyone has different favorite foods!”

One of the most underrated picky eating tips is modeling. It’s so powerful! How can we expect kids to eat a balanced diet and have a positive relationship with food if we are not doing it ourselves or providing good examples in the home? Additionally, we talk about peer pressure a lot in a negative way but our kids peers and pop culture references can positively influence food choices as well!

So tell us, what did your child unexpectedly try because of modeling by a pop culture reference?
